Thorkild Madssen
nucmedtekRegistered in his bible as T.M. Rabben. Said he grew up in Fitjar Sogn 4 miles south of Bergen. Have found 1865 census for his family but cannot locate his siblings after that date. His mother is Marthe Larsdatter and his father is Mads Nilssen. The family name in the U.S. became Nelson. He emigrated in 1888 and settled in Clarkfied,MN, married his school friend Berthe Endresdatter and moved to Clear Lake, South Dakota. He died in 1940 in North Dakota. Would like to locate his siblings and update family tree. Names listed are Blaenes, Uglaenes, Fitjar Sogn and Bekkervik or Bekkjarvik.
HopkinsYou say you've already seen some of these links but it is impossible for anyone to recognize people that you do not list by name and other identification! Thorkel and his family in the 1865 Norwegian census live on Varhaugen - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f61222&gardpostnr=57&sokefelt=skjul One of those siblings emigrated from Bergen in 1890 - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0106EMIG&gardpostnr=226&sokefelt=skjul Thorkel leaving in 1888 appears to have recently resided at a location known as Bekkervig - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0106EMIG&gardpostnr=184&sokefelt=skjul There are many records for Fitjar, Hordaland available for you to search online through the Digitalarkivet - some extending into the 1920's. The LDS Family History Centers can help you order church records for Fitjar for the time period 1862-1928. Earlier church records would be included with Stord district. Also look for books about the area which may give information about his siblings - "Fitjar bygdebok", 2 volumes by Simon Steinsbø; and "Fitjar, bygdeskipnad og bygdesoga", 3 volumes by Jacob Aaland. You have information that any surviving family still in Norway has interest in family history?
jwiborgFitjar parish, but all these farms are located on Selbjørn and Huftarøy islands in Austevoll municipality. Vardhaugen is next to Bekkjarvik. Bekkjarvik is also the name of the bay, so you could say that he is from Vardhaugen farm in Bekkjarvik bay on the Selbjørn island in Austevoll municipality, Hordaland county... nucmedtekI don't know if any family members in Norway are interested in family history as we lost contact when my grandmother died in 1983. She had gone to Norway in the 1970's and located living relatives but that info is now missing.[:(]

HopkinsSorry you lost contact, but glad to hear that you are sure there were/are still relatives in the area fairly recently. Perhaps you could look for a newspaper in that area that might publish your 'human interest' story - or look for any genealogy/historical society in that area. I've only found previously unknown relatives in/from Norway entirely by accident - we were researching the same family and kept stumbling into each other while we searched for and used the old records. We few might luckily have hobbies in common and things to discuss - but we have many other relatives with absolutely no interest in family history.
HopkinsThe FIRST farm name mentioned by Raymond was contained in the bible notation "T.M. Rabben". The Rabben farm is just a little to the west of the Drivenes farm on the map posted by Jan Peter, along the northern coast of the Selbjørn island in Austevoll. Perhaps 'T. Madsen' was residing on that farm at the time he obtained the bible.
nucmedtekInterestingly enough the letter I found with his personal history mentioning the "Rabben" name also has a written notation along the side saying his mother's maiden name was Drivenes.
