Help finding emigration ship...
ErrinWilker	I found my great-grandfather's emigration listed at Digitalarkivet, but am unable to find him at the Ellis Island site. I'd like to find out what ship he came over on. I found him at http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0108EMIG&gardpostnr=154&sokefelt=skjul. His name was Simon Kristofer Hansen Lokøen (#154). According to this information, he departed from the Bergen harbor on 5 April 1892. He went by Christopher Hansen Lee in the US, but I don't know when he changed his name. I've searched the Ellis Island site using every variation of his name that I can think of, but no luck finding him. Any suggestions? Thanks! ~Errin (Lee) Wilker
Obelix	I took interest in this topic, because I live so close to Lokøy. I have nothing to bring forward about Simon Kristofer arriving to Amerika, but I had a closer look into his ancestors in Norway. And I found his parents among my relatives. [8D] Simon Kristofer was born 9 janyary 1873, and baptized 2 march. This, I have from the church book. But in the census 1875, http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f71246&gardpostnr=446&personpostnr=2795&merk=2795#ovre he is in the Peder Christophersen Lie family, where he was fosterchild. P.C. Lie was a brother to one of Simon Kristofer’s grandmothers, and he was a police sergeant, and quite famous as such in the aeria. This explains the name Lee (Lie).
Hopkins	Perhaps he didn't enter through Ellis Island, New York. If he was headed for Texas he may have entered through New Orleans or Galveston. If headed for Wisconsin or Minnesota the port of Quebec, Canada would be highly likely, etc. etc. Did his US naturalization papers include any mention of the actual port that he entered through?
ErrinWilker	I've never seen his naturalization papers. Any idea where I could find those? I believe he originally settled in Illinois, but I'm not positive. He ended up in Forest City, Iowa. Is there sites to search for his emigration other than the Ellis Island site? Thanks for your assistance, Hopkins! :)
Hopkins	Find him in every US federal and Iowa state census possible. Those censuses often collected information about WHEN someone immigrated and sometimes information about when naturalized. The 1925 Iowa state census is a fascinating document - in fact, Iowa did state censuses in 1895, 1905, 1915 and 1925 - they can be VERY interesting when added to the information from the various federal censuses. The best place to start is to track every piece of information possible about his life in the US first. Naturalization was usually completed in a courthouse - in a court of record. Researching naturalizations is a branch of study in itself. I used LDS microfilm copies of Quebec passenger lists for my own family - I never looked for online sites. ErrinWilker	Hello Magne~ Thanks for your reply and for doing some research for me. I had recently come across that 1875 census and also discovered that Simon was a fosterson of Peder Lie. Any idea why? I'm guessing it was because they had several children and that times were tough, but I'm not positive. Do you have any additional information on Peder Lie? jwknudsen	Errin: Try searching for naturalization papers at National Archives & Records Administration (NARA): http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/naturalization/ NARA regional offices have microfilmed passenger lists, naturalization petitions, census data, miltary records, etc. as well as well-connected (ie. free) computer access to many other genealogical sources. Keep in mind that naturalization papers may be filed in county or Federal district courts, which may turn out to be far from the original point of entry. Census data sheets should note a year of naturalization. Best, JK

cmist	I would like to know how to find when my great grandmother sailed for the US from probably Stavanger. Her name was Marie Pedersdatter Nag, Widow of Lars Hansen Haga and her son Peter Mauritsen (age 4), and a daughter Anna(infant). I have records of her being in Strand and the prist recored that she went to America in July 1855. I can't figure out how to search for them in the ships records. I would also like to know any other information about the family or the decendants. Marie came to America to marry My great grandfather Guttorm Guttormsen Naess also from Strand. any help would be appreciated.

ErrinWilker	Have you tried searching the Emigrants at http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebMeta.exe? I've been able to find most of my ancestors by searching there. ~Errin
