HopkinsWhat is the question???
nucmedtekWhere did they originate? Unable to find any records other than the facts presented in the 1880 census records. Can you locate Isabelle's maiden name?
nucmedtekSecondarily, since Caroline was my gr-grandmother would be interested in seeing if you can find any information on her as well.
HopkinsIf it is YOUR family - why don't YOU find more information??? You've mentioned 1880 census records - but where? US? who? What sort of a silly 'test' is this???

nucmedtekHoly Smoke ... I have been thru the digitarkives, the US census records, everything I could think of and never found this info. I don't know how you do it but I'm glad you do. Only puzzle for me now is to figure out why the US census lists the wife as Isabelle and the arkive lists her as Ingeborg. Thank you very much. I realize that my queries have puzzled some (?) but I sometimes forget you don't know what type of research I have already done. I only turn to you as a last resort as I hate to waste your time.
ninakarlsShe's not the only person who changed her name ... It can have something to do with how difficult it is to pronounce some Norwegian names by the English speaking population, but it would of course be more common to change to Inga ... like Guri often changed to Julia and Anders to Andrew. I've also heard this practice explained as "new land, new life, new identity, new name" -what do you think? Isabella has a more international flair to it, to us Norwegians at least. -and I think "Hopkins" is unnecessary rude here. If one doesn't have anything to contribute with or think the requests sound too craving one can always refrain from answering :-)
nucmedtekI never thought that Erickson would have been Eriksen so I never even thought to look there. I guess if they changed their last name it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to have changed the first name also. One more question if I may. Caroline Christenson was only 3 when she emigrated and since I don't know her parents names, where would be a good place to look? I've exhausted the passenger lists and practically scourged the US census records.
Jo Anne SadlerRecommend you read the article on this site - Those Norwegian Names. Ingeborg was commonly shown as Isabel, also Emma. Women also had nicknames, too and Betsy was one that shows up for Ingeborg.
