1865 oslo census symbols used ??
slasorsaI have a question on symbols used on this census. My family is listed as Hans Olsen Husfader g Opslager b. 1837 Sorums Prgj. What does the Prgj. stand for? Next his wife is listed Caren Pauline f. Pedersen Koneg b. 1837 Fredriksvaern. Does the f. before her last name mean she was divorced from Pedersen? The reason I ask is that I found an IGI marrigae record for a Karen Pauline Peterdatter spouse Hans Olsen 26 Jan 1865 Trefoldighet Menghet, Oslo... this is also the birth year for their eldest son Ole Martin Hans listed with them on the 1865 census born in Cristiania...is this a match for a weding date? Thank you everyone!!
Jo Anne SadlerYou should get most of your answers on the Digitalarkivet 1865 census opening page: click here As for reconciling marriage and birth dates, well, that is anyone's guess.[:)]
hastoNo, f. does not mean divorced. It means født=born. Caren Pauline was born as Pedersen (or prossibly Pedersdatter). Yes, they seem to be married 1865 LDS IGI Their daughter was also born 1865: LDS VRI Probably this was Hans Olsen's second marriage, and his first wife died. Perhaps his first wife was Marie Knudsdatter Possibly their son Ole Martin, born 1859 I did not find August born 1862 in Familysearch. Prgj. = prestegjeld = parish
jwiborgActually, if you look under abbreviations used in the 1865 census, "f" is short for fraskilt, ie divorced. But that "f" has to be in the Sivilstand/Marital status column. I guess you're refering to this one. Caren Pauline, f Peders., Kone, g, 29, k, Fredriksværn Caren Pauline, born Pedersdatter, wife, married, 29yo, female, born in Fredriksværn (Stavern, Vestfold) Caren Pauline has a "g" in the marital status column, which means she is married... Jo Anne SadlerYou should start a new topic and provide more information, dates of immigration, ages, parents, etc.
slasorsaThanks to all of you for the help. I have found quite a bit of information and definitely understand it better now. Last question why is the farm name so important when researching...is it the actual farm the family lived on for a long period of time or just recognised as the actual birthplace??
RobertaTry http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/findfarm.html to see if this will answer your questions about the farms and why the name was important.
