Hjalmar Erickson born Tonsberg, immigrated to US
kmboulleHi, I am searching for any information relating to Hjalmar Erickson originally from Tonsberg, Norway. Born about 1873, he immigrated to the US in 1988 (age 15?) and joined the US Army. He served in the Spanish American War and the First World War. He married Adriana ?, born in Cuba in 1888. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Karina Boulle
kmboulleI have found an obit for Hjalmar which states that he immigrated to the US WITH his father at the age of 15, after which he joined the 8th Cavalry and served in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. A 1900 Census shows Magnus (father age 67, widowed) and his son (Julius age 16) living at 130 Walcott Street in Brooklyn, NY, the same address as the one on Hjalmar's naturalization application. I can't find an entry for them on the next Census 1910. Questions: How do I determine when and where Juliane Karine Eriksen died? How do I find information aboutthe 8th Cavalry soldiers, or Hjalmar's military career information? How can I confirm that (I believe) Hjalmar met the young Adriana Lopez-Zias in Cuba during his time there with the Cavalry? As I cannot find a marriage cert for Hjalmar and Adriana in the states, how can I search for one in Cuba? How can I access the Tonsberg records for AFTER 1865 as there seems to be a void from 1864 until 1900? Thank you!!
Jo Anne SadlerYou can access the Tønsberg records by renting the LDS microfilm that I mentioned in a previous posting. If Juliane died in Tønsberg, she would most likely be listed in the church records. Also, the moving out of the parish records would be in the church records. The 1910 census only has a head of household index, not per person so it is a little harder to find people. As far as your other questions, Cyndislist.com, will have lots of links for you to find Cuba and military information. You can contact Arlington National Cemetery, the U.S. Army, etc. And I cannot stress enough that you order their social security applications, even if you do not find anything new, you will have something in their own handwriting. Don't try to figure everything out all at once, you have alot of information already to go on. I have been doing this for over 30 years and haven't found everyone/everything yet.[:p] Some questions have no answers.
kmboulleThanks for the post. I have only been searching for 3 days, but already I am addicted! So fascinating! I have ordered the SS apps as you suggested, so I will wait to see what those say. Thanks again.
Jo Anne SadlerThere is a 1999 Ancestry.com posting for him: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/surnames.erickson/446.447.452.454 He was born on May 25, 1873, died March 2, 1949 in Reno, Nevada and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. In the 1910 census, he is stationed at Fort William Kinley, Rizal, Phillipines. Adriana is 24, born Cuba, with Hjalmar, 1 month, born Phillippines. In 1930 he is a colonel in the U.S. Army, stationed in Takoma Park, Montgomery County, Maryland. His father is listed as Norwegian, mother is Swedish. Hjalmar, Jr., 20 born Phillippines, Karina, 16 born Minnesota, Adriana, 14 born Texas and Yolanda, 11 born Texas. Are you looking for information on her in U.S. or in Norway?
Jo Anne SadlerThe Tønsberg, Vestfold, Norway microfilm records including church records are available for rent at a local Family History Center: click here You have his exact date of birth so locating him in the baptismal records should be quite easy, it would list his parents and godparents.
kmboulleHi Jo Ann, Thank you for the information! I have clicked on the link you provided for Tonsberg, but don't seem to have the information available. Do you know how I could view the birth/christening records in Tonsberg for Hjalmars dates? Also, I am very interested in finding any information on Hjalmars parents, brothers and his wife, Adriana. I don't even know her maiden name although I do know her birthdate: 28 November 1880, Cuba. Would you have any suggestion as to how I could find this? Out of interest, what is your connection to the family? Are you related? Many thanks, Karina
Jo Anne SadlerThese records are not available online, you have to RENT the microfilms, click on Church Records, click on view Film Notes and you will get the number of the microfilm you need to rent. Before you can research in Norway you need to get more information in the U.S. On the free Rootsweb.com, Adriana Erickson, born November 28, 1880, died March 1976 in Silver Springs, Montgomery County, Maryland. You can click on a form letter to request a copy of her Social Security application, it costs $27. and would include alot of information including the names of her parents. You can also get a copy of Hjalmar's Social Security application but you will have to supply a copy of his death certificate as he is not listed on the index because he died before the index started in 1962. You can order the death certificates online through Vitalrec.com, click on the appropriate states. You have the exact dates of death so it should not be a problem. Yes, you will have to spend money but not everything is free and not everything is on the Internet.[:0] No, I am not related, I am just one of the many people who help look up information on this forum.[;)]
kmboulleWow! Thank you again for all the information! You have definitely given me a head start in my search. I do appreciate it v much!

kmboulleHi Jan, I think you have found something! It seems very probable that this is the correct person. Interesting that he named his daughter Karine after his mother, and I am named the Karina as well after his daughter, my grandmother. Once I have verified that this information actually relates to my great grandfather, do you know how I could trace the descendents of his sister, Mathilde and brother, Karl? Do you know how I would trace any living relatives in Norway from the information I now have? Thank you very much. Karina Boulle
jwiborgHi, yes it looks very promising...! [;)] This could be his sister Mathilde Konstanse born 1868. This Mathilde is married to Andreas Ruud. However, it's noted that she is born in Hof, Jarlsberg, Vestfold, which is quite a bit further north than Tønsberg.... Mathilde b.1864 could have died as an infant, since they have a new Mathilde born 1868. Also, this Hjalmar Marinus born 1866, could be a misspelling of Hjalmar Magnus. Maybe this child also died as an infant, since they got a new Magnus Hjalmar in 1873?
Jo Anne SadlerIn 1900, Hjalmar was a 2nd lieut., single, stationed at Fort Street, Alaska. Permanent address was Brooklyn, NY. His date of birth is indicated as May 27, 1873. Some of the Tøngsberg parish records have been digitalized by Digitalarkivet, but not unfortuately for 1873: click here
Jo Anne SadlerWell, thanks to Jan Peter's info, this appears to be Magnus and Karine in the 1865 census in Tønsberg: 1865 Magnus, slagter-butcher, born Sweden, parents and other family members listed. To print out these records, I use Landscape mode and Hide Search Field. This is the best dictionary I have found to read the old records: http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm
jwiborgI saw this couple also, and it was interesting that one of them was born in Sweden. This Karine is noted as an Olsen , which could be wrong from the census. Hjalmar's mother is indeed a Christiansdr, according to the marriage and birth records. Here is their son Emil Konrad's birth records. His mother is indeed Karine Olsen, not Christiansdr... [B)]
kmboulleALL very interesting! So would this mean then that Emil's parents are not the correct Karina and Magnus? Also, do you feel that Mathild (1968) married to A Ruud is the sister of my Hjalmar? If so, how would you suggest I trace her descendants and any other descendants of her siblings in Norway? Regarding the 1900 Census, I had found a Hjalmar Erickson who lived in Humboldt Ca and worked in a mill. The birth date and parentage didn't seem to match as closely as the one you found in the 1900 census. I know from my ggrandather's obit that he served in Alaska, so this one must be correct. Would you know how I could trace Hjalamr's descendants in America. There seemed to have been an estrangement in the family bewteen Hjalmar and his wife and there is not much family history passed down. I have info on my gradnmother, Karina Erickson (but not much) and nothing on any of his other children. I have found another Hjalmar Erickson which could have been his son and it looks as if he dies at 30, buried in a Vet cemtery. Do you think this is correct? Thanks v much for your help!!
kmboulleWith regards Mathilde (1968) christening records, do you know what information is entered on the page to the right in the original image? It looks as if it could be information about her grandparents?
kmboulleI have just found what I think must be Mathilde (1968)'s death record in the parish record of 1964, Tonsberg. Entry 37. Date Oct 1-6 1964. Does this look accurate?
kmboulleUnfortunately the parish records don't seem to go beyond 1864, so I can't verify what became of the first son named Hjalmar (1866). Do you know where I might find this information in other records?
jwiborgWhere did you find Mathilde's death record ???
kmboulleI am wondering why the spelling of my Hjalmar's last name seems to have changed when he came to America. It is Erickson on his naturalisation application. Is there any way to find the immigration information for when he arrived? It seems that he came to America in 1888 via New York. I have searched the ships records and have not found any entries for an Erickson, Hjalmar. Any ideas?
kmboulleI found her death record at http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_id=1279. 1864 death record in Tonsberg, entry 37, Oct 1/6. Looks like the correct one although I cant completely make out the father's name. Looks like Eriksen. What do you think?
jwiborgHi, I think you're right about that girl! [;) link #37, octbr 1 (dead), octbr 6 (buried), barsel.. kmboulleI have noticed that Hjalamr was survived by a brother Julius E. Johnson in San fernando California when Hjalmar dies in Reno. Couldthis be another brother perhaps named differently, after the mother? Born perhaps later than Hjalmar? Thanks so much for your help!!
kmboulleDo youthink that the Johannes living at the house in the 1865 census could be the paternal grandfather. Perhaps the brother Julius E Johnson was named after him? Isn't there a naming tradition in Norway for children in relation to parent's and grandparent's names? Perhaps if there was another son born named Julius (perhaps 7/22/1890??) who then immigrated to the States, he took the surname of his grandfather Johannes/sen=Johnson. What do you think?
kmboulleI have found a Julius Eric Johnson in the California Death Index 1940-1997. The father of Julius is listed as Erikson and the birthplace 'Other Country'. Date of birth: 12 Jan 1884 Date of death: 3 Feb 1959 SS number provided. I will now search the parish records for Tonsberg and see whether there was another son born, Julius.
