My ggrandfather, Christian Paulson, was born in Arendal on 4/1/1834, to Poul Christenson & Tobine Thorsdatter. According to familysearch they had three other children: Peder, 1840; Niels, 1845; and Anne 1848. My problem is that I know he arrived in Melbourne, Australia on 19/Nov/1853 aboard the "Jenny Lind" from Hamburg, but there is no emigration record that I can find. Did emigrants by land need to make a report before leaving, as did those who left by sea? If anyone can help me with this or any info on the Paulsen family, it would be greatly appreciated.

As early as in 1853 no records were made of emigrants in Norway. The first such records dates back to 1867. Before this date we do find people leaving their church parish lists in outmigrant lists, but there are many missing years, and not as a rule. We also find many emigrants listed in the police passport registers, but only partly. So, it is a question of having luck, and patience.
