passenger lists
meslagI am trying to find out which ship/vessel my grandpa came over on and when. His name is Seger Martin Seljeskog and he was born in Stavanga, Norway on June 2, 1885. Supposedly his Father, Martin, came to America a few years after that. Then a few years later (about 1889, as grandpa said he was 4 when he came here), Seger, Malina/Malena (Martin's wife) and Lars (Martin's brother) came to America. And they all came through Ellis Island. I have been up and down the web, through this website and am having trouble getting any answers with those particular dates. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!
BorgeStavanger departures are not indexed yet. Furthermore, the emigration records from the Stavanger Police was destroyed in a fire, so to reconstruct the sailing lists will be a very time consuming piece of work. However, we do hope to get on to that project in the future. In the mean time you might have some luck with the Digitalarkivet, as they have reconstructed parts of the emigration lists from Stavanger. Børge Solem
meslagThe most frustrating things for me right now is 1} that no one knows for sure if they boarded the boat at Stavanga or where, and 2} I was told that they docked at Ellis Island. However, the Ellis Island passenger lists don't start until 1892. I have "tripped across" a few Norway websites and really wish I knew the language, as I found a few I would've liked to have read. Any more info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all your time. Lori Gehring
SvanhildThe emigrant list from Stavanger(searchable on the digital archive's site) shows that Martin Seljeskog emigrated from Stavanger in 1888.No date or ship's name mentioned.
meslagI know, I found Martin yesterday. I was a bit surprised to see the destination was set for this little town, as none of them really knew for sure where they were going. I still haven't found his son, wife or brother. Thanks, tho, for noticing Martin! Lori Gehring
