Adolph Wattner arrived New York in 1870
chrisLooking for the ship and exact date Adolph Wattner arrived. He came with his wife Othilde Elizabeth Waerensjoid Wattner and son Carl Alfred Wattner. They lived in Skien then moved to Oslo. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.
BorgeThey do not seam to be registered in the Christiania police records when emigrating (at least not in the online database), maybe they went back to Skien to board a ship from there, or maybe they went from another port. We will be transcribing the 1870 passenger list in not too long (I hope) but that is of ships arriving at Quebec. Børge Solem
askeroiBørge is quite right. The only information I can add is that they were living i Oslo in 1865 http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f60301&variabel=0&postnr=24324&fulle=true&spraak=F but NOT in 1875. So they left the town sometime in between - maybe in 1870 as you state. Unfortunately this doesn't bring you any further, it's just confirming what you already know. askeroi
BorgeI actually have found a wonam by the name "Elisabeth Wathner" on a 1870 passenger list to Quebec, she is listed as 35 years of age and a widow from Skien , she is traveling with her two sons Thorval 3 years old and Carl 6 months old - could this be your people, I don't see Adolph, and she is a widow [:0]
chrisThank you, that has to be them. Elisabeth was born in 1835, Thorwald was born in 1866, Carl was born in April of 1869. I wonder why she is listed as a widow, Adolph is in the 1865 Oslo census and the 1870 New york census. What is the name of that ship and the dates? In one of my census records from Texas Adolph states he emigrated in 1869 and Elisabeth in 1870, I always thought whoever took the census made a mistake. Thanks a million.
BorgeThey were listed on the Laurdal sailing from Porsgrunn Apr. 15 mastered by Captain J. L. Petersen and arrived to Quebec June 12. Why she is listed as a widow if she wasn't is a mystery, maybe an error on the list or maybe they had reasons for wanting people to believe that Adolph was dead. Here on the scan you can see that it reads "Enke" by Elisabeth's name, which means widow:

chrisThanks again Borge, we really appreciate the effort you put into this. We have been looking a long time, Thanks. Now I will be looking to see why Adolph left a year before she did and what ship he took in 1869.
chrisUnder Carl's name there is a woman with them named Emma ? from Skien. Can someone make out her last name and also what it says about her occupation. I have looked in the 1865 Norway census but am unable to locate her in it. Thanks
ninakarlsMaybe one of these two? http://129.177.171.80/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f60721.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=4259&fulle=true&spraak=e http://129.177.171.80/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f60301.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=53579&fulle=true&spraak=e As far as I can make out, her occupation is Tjenestepige (=servant girl)
BorgeThey are listed in Martin Ulvestad's book "Nordmændene i Amerika", as pioneers in Kaufman County, Texas! It says that Johan Reierson (the well known) moved from Brownsboro to Four Mile Prairie, Kaufamn Co, in 1848, he founded the settlement there, and the village Prairieville. Then among the Norwegians who came to the settlement later are listed: Adolf, Fred, Torvald and Carl Vatner.
