Mattson/Johnson
rowboatI would like some help finding the roots of my mother's family. Nels A. Mattson b. May 13, 1849 in Tromso. His father was Mathias Mattson b. abt. 1822 in ?Tromso? Mathias was married in Norway to Anna Johnson b. Feb. 1823 in ?Tromso? Nels came to the US prior to 1882 but I don't know when. Nels married Baret Maria Anderson in Minnesota in 1882. Baret was born in Norway on May 10, 1857. My grandmother, Agnes Berntine Johnson, was born Nov 29, 1903 in Balsfjord, Troms County, her father was Carl Olai Johnson b. June 12, 1875. Carl's parents were John Anderson and Bertha Vanberg. Carl's wife was Nelle B. Larson. Carl, Nelle, and Agnes left Norway on June 9th 1904. The port was Trondheim I think. The ship was Merian? I know that Carl's brother Sorn Albert Johnson, b. Jan 26, 1877, came to Minnesota too. At least four other siblings stayed in Norway. Siblings names were John, George, Nick, Andreas, Hensina, Ole, and Nels. WOW! I would be most gracious for some leads. Thanks.
askeroiI can’t find Nels and his family in Tromsø neither in the 1865 or 1875 cencuses. Strange if he was born there – unless he emmigrated before 1865? I’ll try to look elsewhere for him… But at least here’s ”Carl Olai Johnson”s family in Balsfjord in the 1900 cencus. He was at that moment working on the railway. His brothers are all fishers AND mineworkers. Please note that his mother was born in Malangen, not Balsfjord: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1900/f01933&variabel=0&postnr=2578&fulle=true&spraak=F And here’s the family in the 1875 cencus of Balsfjord. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1875/f71933&variabel=0&postnr=1880&fulle=true&spraak=F And here’s his father as a servant in the 1865 cencus: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f61933&variabel=0&postnr=36&fulle=true&spraak=F This is a good start for researching Balsfjord… http://home.online.no/~asjonass/kilder/19troms/1933bals.htm GOOD LUCK! askeroi
rowboatThis is GREAT news! Thank You I am not certain where the Mattsons were born or when they emmegrated. I have a death certificate for Nels Mattson that says he and his parents were born in Tromso. The informant may have been mistaken. Thanks again! Bob
askeroiVery few people were born in cities as early as the 1820s. They are probably born some small place close to Tromsø. A place no-one outside have knowledge about. Then you use the closest bigger place to tell were you are from. A logical thought we all can think of using. I've swept Balsfjord and Malangen for them - with no luck. But I'll keep on looking. Suddenly they might just be in front of me... askeroi
askeroiSorry to say that there are absolutely none fitting the Mattson/Johnson description in the 1865 census. Not in the whole country. It looks like they must have emmigrated before 1865. Or my imagination of what the names has been americanized from isn't good enough. There are two or three that could be "Baret Maria Anderson" though - but in Bergen and Buskerud - very far from Northern Norway. Do you have any idea of WHERE (at least what part of Norway) she was born? askeroi
rowboatI don't know where Baret Maria Anderson was born. The death cert. only said Norway. The parents were Erick Anderson and Ellen ?Anderson? The Date listed for her birth was May 10, 1857. Sorry it took so long to get back to this page. I have been very busy. Thanks again for your time. Bob

rowboatThank you so much for your time to find my ancestors. This looks like it could be them. Bob
askeroiGreat news. And here they are in the 1865 cencus. (It was my imagination on the name spelling that was unsatisfactory...): http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f61936&variabel=0&postnr=305&fulle=true&spraak=F askeroi
askeroiAnd the Karlsøy info also made the Mattson/Johnsons findable in the 1865 cencus: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f61936&variabel=0&postnr=1243&fulle=true&spraak=F askeroi
rowboatI can't thank you guys enough for all you have done to find my ancestors. I appreciate it so much. Kind regards, Bob
rowboatIn my first post, I mentioned Nellie B. Larson married to Carl Olai Johnson. I wondered if you had anything on Nellie. I have a birth date of April 16, 1880. I think her father's name was John Larson and mother's name was ? Slevia? I assume they were also from the Balsfjord area. I also show that Carl and Nellie were married in Norway in 1902. You guys did a great job before. I wish I could give you more information. Thanks
