Grandma 's emigration
Connie Lawson	A letter written by my Grandmother in 1892 indicates that she was on the steamer, ISLAND, out of Kristiania, and landed in New York on October 31, 1892. Can anyone search the passenger list for that vessel for Maria Katerina Löfstrom and anyone else in her party? The ship probably was a Scandinavian- American liner. Thank you.
Borge	Hello Connie I was not able to find her on the Digitalarkivet online emigration records for the Kristiania police. The list gives the nemes of 112 passengers departing from Kristiania on the S/S Island of the Thingvalla Steamship Line on October 15th 1892. Do you have any other information, like where she was from, her age, or names of others going with her? Børge Solem
Connie Lawson	Greetings Borge Solem: In answer to my query about my Grandmother, Marie Katarina Lofstrom, you said there was no record with the Kristiana police. She was from Uppsala, Sweden, and departed first from Stockholm. In her letter she said "our journey with boat from Stockholm." Then, "on the big boat 'Island'----from Kristiania all the way till we got ashore in New York----{then a description of how sick she was}--." Her age would have been about 40. She had three children under the age of 7 with her, Konrad, Jr., Elsa and Olga. So, did she change ships in Oslo? If so, would she still register with the police? I've had no luck with Ellis Island,either! In her letter, she said they took yet another boat to Boston. I've failed to find lists about that time in Boston. (First week of November, 1892. I thank you for your aid.
Borge	Connie I do not think they would register again in Oslo, as they had already gotten their contracts signed in Stockholm. They would only transfere in Oslo. You should be able to find them in the Stockholm police emigration record, unfortunately they are not online, but they are available on CD i think. I wonder if the reason why you can't find them in the Ellis Island db could be that she was using another name? Like a patronymic or used another surname? Connie Lawson	Mr. Borge: I finally found my grandmother, Maria K. Lofstrom, on the Ellis Island website. After exhausting their suggested alternate spellings to no avail, I tried some of my own. The spelling "Lofstran" worked, and there she was! So I want to thank you all at the Norway Heritage Forum for their courtesies.
