JUMPING SHIP
jackiehi mY gREAT GRANDFATHER SAILED IN A WHEAT SHIP TO AUSTRALIA BETWEEN 1873-1880. HIS NAME WAS LAURITS MONSEN AND HE IS IN THE 1865 CENSUS FROM FARSUND. HOWEVER HE CALLED HIMSELF LAURITS ANDERSEN IN AUSTRALIA AND MARRIED MY GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER IN 1881. WE HAVE NO RECORDS OTHERWISE. I AM TRYING TO FIND WHICH SHIP HE CREWED ON AND WHEN HE JUMPED SHIP, POSSIBLY IN NEWCASTLE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD HE WAS AN ENGINEER. I AM ALSO TRYING TO FIND THE REST OF HIS FAMILY OR DESCENDANTS. JACKIE
BorgeWe just had another discussion here concerning the Searching for seamen's registers, started by Birtles. Check this tread: http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=387 It turned out that the registers from Farsund seams to have been lost. If he was actually a resident of Farsund that might make it a little hard to recover the information that you are looking for. However, you should try a letter to the Statsatkivet in Kristiansand just to see what they say. Børge Solem
