Veslegard
Rosanne G. KamkaIs anyone familiar with the farm Veslegard or Sveinunggard?
BorgeThere is a Veslegaard, Veslegaarden and Sveinunggaard in Hol, Buskerud Børge Solem
Rosanne G. KamkaI can't thank you enough. I am trying to research my mothers family history. I have been given multiple family names. In addition to the 2 I gave you I have also been given Lillegard, Lillegardslien and Bruvollen. Can I assume they are also in Hol, Buskerud? Is Hol, Buskerud in the North or South of Norway? Do families still go by the farm name? Thank You Again! Rosanne
BorgeThere are 13 places by the name of Bruvold in the 1865 census and 24 in 1900. There are also a number of different spelling variations of that name, such as Brovold, Bruvoll, Bruvolden. You need to have some names of persons that can be linked to one of the farms to be able to determine which one is right. The same goes actually for Lillegaard, several farms by that name. Actually it is funny, Lillegarden and Veslegarden has the same meaning, it means "the small farm" Børge Solem

Rosanne G. KamkaThank You Again! It is my understanding that my ggggrandfather is Nils Nilsen Lillegard. If you are able to help me with any information I would appreciate it. Is there a way I can find out if I have any living relatives still in Norway? I have also been told that there were 2 books written I might be interested in "Nore & Uvdal, Forn og Nye" and "Aeldre og yngre Slegter fra Tunhovdbygden, Norge". Would you know where I could find these? Rosanne
julteigRosanne - The books you mention are farm history books (Bygdebok). 'Nore-Uvdal i forn og nye' was published by the Nore-Uvdal Kommune. There are 5 volumes plus an index published between 1973 and 1977. I don't know if you could buy them someplace, but the Library Loan Program in our library system can usually get bygdebok's, except the most rare. If you don't read a little Norwegian, the bygdeboks are difficult to use. However, there is at least one translation program for the computer, that is inexpensive and can translate very well, if you have the time to type in the pages you are interested in. The following will get you to the list of bygdeboks at the Univ of North Dakota, the problem is they are not available for loan. http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/library/Collections/Famhist/bygdebok.html Have you tried the Familysearch, the LDS website? Good luck, John
repete009While I am a novice at genealogy, I couldn't help but quickly recognize that you may be talking about my pedigree. Clara PLADSON (grandmother) was the daughter of Nils Halvorson PLADSON & Caroline Kittleson (g.g.grandfather/mother). Nils's parents were Halvor Ostensen PLADSON and Barbro Nilsdatter LILLEGARD (g.g.g.grandfather/mother). Barbro's parents were Nils Nilsen Sveinunggard LILLEGARD and Gunhild Kittelsdatter ROTEGARD (g.g.g.g.grandfather/mother). Nils's parents were Nils Olsen BRUVOLLEN and Kari Jorgensdatter GRIMSGARD (g.g.g.g.g.grandfather/mother). I understand there is a LILLEGARD/VESLEGARD Book (in this case, I believe they are one and the same) that has been publish and which I'm trying to get my hands on. Living in Japan does make some thing a bit difficult. At this time, I have no locations for the Norway residents and very limited information on dates of birth/marriage/death. Would love to work with you all in filling in hundreds of blanks.
Jo Anne SadlerThere is a look up volunteer for Hol, Buskerud that might be able to help you: http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo/norway.html Some Buskerud information: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/buskerud.html
kaare nI have been playing around in the 1865 census fore some time and found something that I think ( just think ) can be something. You do not give any years so it is difficult. So, pleas look at this, as just something, maybe it is something to look in to? It is a man Halver (Halvor) Østensen married with a Barbro Nilsdatter and they have a son called Nils Data on domicile: Census year: 1865 Municipality: Nes Municipality number: 0616 Name of domicile: Rødningen Grønskalet Number of persons in this domicile: 4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name Family status Marital status Occupation Birth year Place of birth Ethnicity Halver Østensen g Huusmd m Jord, Dagarbeider 1817 Næs Barbro Nilsdatter hans Kone g 1821 Nore Nils Halvorsen deres Søn ug 1852 Næs Prgj. Halvor Halvorsen deres Søn ug 1863 Næs Prgj.
repete009Kaare, I love the way you 'play around' with the census! Dates: Halvor Ostensen PLADSON; b 16 Nov 1817 in Norway Barbro Nilsdatter LILLEGARD; b 1821 in Norway Nils Halvorsen PLADSON; b 09 Oct 1852 Halvor Halvorsen PLADSON (here we have a mismatch); b 19 Aug 1865 In addition, I show: Osten Halvorsen PLADSON; b 05 Feb 1846 Margot PLADSON; b 15 Jun 1847 Plus: Gunhild, Kari, & Knut with no dates or other data. While they may be related, there is some question as to whether they are 'immediate' family. Personally, I believe Osten & Margot are, but can't prove it - YET. Can you find these two anywhere in the census? You DID say 1865, so I have other conflicting info from other sources that has the family out of Norway BEFORE that census. The different dates would explain why I couldn't find them in the USA that early. ("When Nils and his sons left for America, Barbro and Halvor took over South Veslegard. But in 1860 they sold it and came to America.") This statement doesn't ring true because I show Nils got married on 02 Apr 1874 in Worth County, Iowa, USA. And the '1860' date must be off by around 8-10 years.
kaare nMaybe Østen in census 1865 http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0616&kenr=008&bnr=0067&lnr=000 Just a shot Margot could be Marie One born in Næs in 1847 http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0220&kenr=006&bnr=0140&lnr=00 Several Gunhild and Kari Halvorsen born in Næs, no Knut
repete009I am learning quickly (I think). This website has tons of info. I just need to learn how to use it properly. Based on your feedback, Kaare, I came up with the following, putting Osten and Margit in the same domicile: http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0518&kenr=007&bnr=0109&lnr=00 How should I differentiate between this information and your information? Dates? Location? (I'm still trying to understand the geography of Norway.)
repete009Sorry, I believe my last posting's information is a result of me going off on a totally wrong tangent. I have been taking a longer look at your information, Kaare, and realized that I shouldn't ALWAYS try to put people in the same household. When we reach a certain age, we all seem to fly the coop, don't we... With no Norway census prior to 1865, I believe it's time to seek information from the sources mentioned earlier. Thank you so much for you support and the lesson.
Jo Anne SadlerWell, there is an 1801 census and an 1660 military census but recommend you do the other research first to help identify the correct people.
repete009Thank you, Jo Anne; I wasn't aware of those two census periods. I've made note of them and will look into those when my research gets back that far. In the meantime, I have requested 'volunteer' support and awaiting their first response. Thanks again, everyone's help, from tidbits to major details, are greatly appreciated.
kaare nGo to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp Put in Sveinunggard as last name. Then try Veslegard , Lillegard and Pladson
repete009Kaare, thank you once again for the lesson. You keep teaching and I will keep learning. In the beginning, I was told to work through my ancestory chronologically reversed. I see now where it will sometimes be necessary to reverse the process. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
dmoore47Repete009, I am also a novice at geneology. I am also working on my family history and my son found this website today. I am 7th generation directly descended from Barbro Nilsdatter Pladson of Sveinunggard farm. Repete009 , if you are out there, you are my cousin (twice removed?)! Clara Pladson was my grandmother's sister...her name was Selma Olena Pladson (married name Siljan.) She was born in 1894 and passed away in 1995 at 100 years and 6 mos. I have the book "The Family from Sveinunggard, Lillegard, and Lillegardslien" that I think you referred to---it was written in 1982 by a Charles Benrud and given to my grandmother. I also have a photograph of Nils Ostenson Pladson and Josephine Kittleson (my great-grandparents) with their 7 surviving children (including Aunt Clara.) Clara was the 3rd oldest of the 7, and my "Nana" was the last born. The picture is circa 1900. They lived in Hatton, North Dakota at the time. They moved to Saskatchewan, Canada not long after 1900, where g-grandfather Nils died in 1919. Also, I think you are correct on your date of marriage for Nils and Caroline (1874.) My history states Barbro and Halvor sold South Veselgard in 1860 and came to America DURING the 1860's. So it's possible that they could have still been in Norway in 1865. Nils' and Caroline's first child (our Great Aunt Ida) was born in 1876 (probably 2 yrs after their marriage.) Hope to hear a response. Diane Moore
