ALSO JUMPED SHIP, ENDED UP NY
kim DanielsenHi. I've also been trying to determine when and where my g-grandfather jumped ship in the U.S. Supposedly he left Norway as a sailor on a Norwegian ship; jumped ship in the U.S.; ended up in Bronx, NY where he married my g-grandmother. I'd been told he was very young when he left Norway, perhaps 16; however, his 1920 NY census entry says he came to the U.S. in 1881, which would have made him 12 yrs of age! Is that possible?? The info I have on him is as follows: Kristian Danielsen born 11 sep 1869 Vanse, Lista parish, Vest-Agder christened 20 sept 1869 (birth & christening dates verified through Norwegian Emigration Cntr) died 1953, Bronx NY married Mary Reynolds about 1900 [Bronx NY?] If he sailed from Norway at age 16, that would have been approximately 1885. If he sailed in 1881 (as per 1920 US census), he would have been age 12. Per 1920 NY census, he was naturalized 1892 (age 23) Does anyone have any advice as to where I'd look to see if he was indeed a member of a Norwegian ship, and if they perhaps noted that he'd jumped ship in the U.S.---and where? Thanks a lot. Kim Danielsen
BorgeHello Kim I suggest that you send the information that you have to the Kristiansand archive to get his sailors records: Statsarkivet i Kristiansand Marthas vei 1 Postuttak 4604 Kristiansand I found him listed in the emigration records for Kristiansand 1890: 18776 - 1297 - 1890 Aug. 29 - 2908 - Christian Danielsen - m - U - Sømand (sailor) - 22 (age) - Vanse Sogn (origin) - New York (dest.) - Legitim. - Norge Børge Solem
kim DanielsenThank you Borge. I'm so excited that you found Christian in the indexes! I will contact them for further info. As you can see I successfully logged back on---thanks for the help there too! ...Kim Danielsen kdgeneal@mindspring.com
