hannedyveke	A half-brother of my grandfather mowed to America and I can`t find him on any lists. His name was: Andreas Falck Johanson/Johansen, born in 1856. In 1896 he lived in Sioux City, America. No state was mention. Is there any place where I can searsh for him? Census, records?? He came from Vefsn/Vefsen, Northern-Norway He was born on a farm called Greva/Grøva.

There is the 1900 census which is available by subscription through genealogy.com or the series of censuses from ancestry.com. I did a quick search in the 1900 census but I didn't find him using Johanson/Johansen. Spellings are a real problem. Genealogy.com has a nice index for the census but it is only as good as the person who typed it. The enumerators spelled things incorrectly too. Or you can rent the films at your local LDS. hannedyveke	Hi, and thank you for your answer :-) Someone told me that he left Norway in 1880, but I am not sure. When I looked someone had the name Andrea Falk, but Andrea is a girls name.. So I don`t know..I had hoped that they used the farm-name; Greva, but only one brother did so... All I know is that he lived in Sioux City in 1896, but I don`t know whitch name he used in the Norwegian papers his Norwegian name is used. What is a LDS?? Thank you so much for your reply.
Borge	Hanne LDS (Latter Day Saints) is what we in Norway call "Mormonerne". They have a family research center in Eirik Jarlsgt. 5 where they let us genealogists use their material for a small fee. Børge Solem
hannedyveke	Hi Børge., thank you :-)) Silly me!!!! I knew that, but didn`t use my head right... They have some information about my family on their site, but a lot is wrong. I should have told them long ago.... A tip; I have been looking for information about my grandfathers siblings. My grand-grandfather died in Norway and I found some information in his inheritance. But, that was from 1896. Later, some of his siblings died in Norway, and they were not married and had no kids. So, there I can find newer information about them who left. Sioux City, America, is better than nothing, but often you can find some more information. I called for an inheritance from 1940 and it was not any problem to get it. So people who is looking for Norwegians maybe can do the same?? Just an idea.. Hanne Dyveke
Stephanie Benoit	Hanne, I think finding him at this point would be very difficult. You could assume that he was in Sioux City in 1900 but you would have a hard time finding him unless you go page by page through the census -- unless you can find him with the Soundex which hopefully would be available with the census - if it is available there at all. I have checked many possibilities including Falk, Falck and most of the J***** spellings - though I could have missed him I suppose. I was thinking it might be a good idea to contact http://nordlandslag.tripod.com/ Maybe some relatives are working from the US side, trying to get back to Norway. You can post at http://genforum.genealogy.com/ia/ and http://genforum.genealogy.com/ia/woodbury/ and http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=an&p=localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.woodbury and look at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iawoodbu/ You can also post on the surname sites for Johansen, Johnson, Falk, Falcks, etc. Or you could subscribe to the 1900 census at genealogy.com and sit back and look at every page for Sioux City. hannedyveke	Hi Stephanie. Thank you for your reply. I have posted everywhere!!! I got some help on rootsweb, but it is not easy with a so ordinary name.. I have asked, in Norway, for some more information when my grand-grandmother died. Maybe I got some more info there. She died in 1940 so maybe her children in America is named with their American names. I have mailed Nordlandslaget, but got no answer at all. Also tried Norwegian-American groups, but no luck.... Most of them don`t answer at all. I have also mail to different helplists. But, after your tip, i will try some more. If some of my relativs in America is trying to find family in Norway they have a easy job. They came from the farm Greva and if they asked someone about it, in Norway, they will find the place in 2 seconds! It`s only one place in Nothern-Norway with that name, and all people with sir-name Greva is related. Thank You :-)

Hopkins	"Andrew F. Johnson" is listed in 1900 US census as living in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. Born May 1856 in Norway, immigrated to US about 1879, married for 18 years to Sena (also born Norway) and two children, daughter Emma (b. 1883 in Iowa) and Emiel (b. 1889 in Iowa).
