EMILIE -1840
James E HegBørge - I suddenly have a whole bunch of info on this voyage and the passengers. There is another pass. list that matches yours except the numbers are off by one (ie: your 25 is 26, etc). There is a flood of info on many of the people and what they did upon arrival, etc. In the form it is presented on my computer it takes a bit of work. The data is presented serially and not in columns. An affidavit by Capt. Anchersen precedes this list. You may already have this. In the meantime, I will try to get it re-sent in better shape. What was I doing with my life before I found this site?? Jim
BorgeGreat news Jim! I think I will have to make some better scans of the original list, the one posted on the site now is not all that clear. I will get the new scans up tomorrow: http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_scan.asp?jo=538 Glad to have you on onboard! Børge Solem
James E HegBørge - I have some of the narrative ready to send. I took the liberty of changing the format and editing some of the english but made no change in content. Give me some instructions. Can I attach it to an e-mail to you? Jim Erik Bye is a friend of mine.
BorgeYes, please send it as an attachment to an e-mail, or within the body of the mail for shorter texts. Børge Solem
James E HegBørge - Did you receive my mail w/attachment? I have so much info on this EMILIE crowd in my computer, I am having a problem keeping track. If you received the first, I have another batch to send. It can wait. I do not want to overwhelm you. Your website is akin to a family tree - branches everywhere! Jim Erik Bye is a friend of mine.
James E HegBørge - I received your msg re use of the material. Have inquired of NAHA, then asked my son for his source. We may have struck gold! Check the following web site <http.www.naha.stolaf.edu/publications.htm>. Check volume XIV for the info I sent you plus much, much more. NAHA has not yet responded to my inquiry but I would have to think this info is in the public domain. I am willing to help you on this overwhelming lot of info. Jim Heg Erik Bye is a friend of mine.
James E HegBørge - A little more info on the EMILIE-1840 passenger list. this is a footnote from NAHA Studies and Records Vol. 14. "A.A. Vinje (pass #87), whose account many years later, places the number of passengers in 1840 at 90. The ship's list enumerates eighty-nine passengers, and one of these (number 77) was probably born enroute to New York. It is possible, however, that one or two of the passengers may have died during the trip without any record being made of the fact. The name of a man 80 years old was entered between numbers 43 and 44 of our list but later struck out." I think you read the age of that garbled (44 on your list)as 30. In any case, maybe we understand that entry a bit more. Also, the clear name given in the NAHA list (without a number) is H.J. Thune. I note that the NAHA list also states the age of this unnumbered person as 30. Jim (Your format buttons do not work for me) Erik Bye is a friend of mine.
