Knut Aslaksen Kirkevold - Arrived NY May 1886
klarI have been unable to find my grandfather, Knut Aslaksen Kirkevold, on any of the manifests. Family records indicate he immigrated from Norway to US via NY in May 1886. Would welcome any help. Donna
BorgeDo you have any additional information, like where he lived in Norway, and if he was traveling with other members of his family? Børge Solem
Stephanie BenoitHi Donna, Would that be Knud Aslakson Kirkevold b. 27 September 1869 who died in 1940 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Wisconsin? Married Mathilde and had Alfred Theodore b. 9 August 1907 and at least one other son? This Knud immigrated in 1886 too though I don't know what ship so I am not any help there. I can give you more details if this is the correct one. This one came from Vestre Slidre, Oppland, Børge, if it is the right person. Stephanie
BorgeOppland emigrants usually departed from Christiania (Oslo), so if it is the right person Stephanie found we might be able to trache the emigration in the Digitalarkiver db. Børge Solem
ToelitaIf Opplanders left from Christiania what port would people from west Telemark(Mo)use? I have ggrandfathers coming over between 1866 and 1870, and 1886 or 1888. I found them on the census in 1865 in Norway and in Wisconsin in 1880. They look a little closer to Bergen but are the mountains in the way?

Børge Solem Borge, Knut was from Vistre Slidre, and, yes, to Stephanie, he is the same one buried in Manitowoc. I don't have no clue whether he came over on his own or with someone. He had an older brother Ole and sister, Ingeborg, who also came over, but when I don't know. Any help would be appreciate. Sorry about my delay in responding. I'm new to this message board. Donna

I was not able to find them in the Digitalarkivet emigration records for Christiania. However, that is not so strange, as you state the year was 1886, and unfortunately most of the 1886 records has not been transcribed and included in that database yet. My advice is therefore to check the film of the original if you can access it where you live, maybe through the LDS or ILL?. Børge Solem
