Re: Hallingdal
spikeI have ancestors that all they say on the census and Naturalization papers is they are from Hallingdal. The map I have shows 6 parts to Hallingdal. I am wondering how to or if I can find a more definite location for their origin. I don't have much luck searching the census or church records. Hallingdal is not a name in the archives.
BorgeWhat are the names and details of the people you are looking for? There are several parishes to look for: Hol, Aal, Torpo, Gol, Herad and Nes. Børge Solem Edited by - Borge on 20/06/2002 19:03:11
harstadIf you ever visit Hallingdal, they have a local archives open several hours a week (next to town civic center). I was at the archives exactly one year ago (Thursday AM), and found some helpful people (especially after we established a blood relationship). It's a pretty town with a museum up on the hillside, and the 1000-yr old Torpo church is a bus ride away. v/R Mark Harstad
harstadSorry for confusion: I'm referring to Aal in Hallingdal. - Mark
BorgeHei Mark I visited those archives in October last year, just missed you. I have the name and address of one of the seniors working as a volunteer at the archives. I also have the e-mail address to a local historian who is working on the bygdebooks for Aal. I could forward a question to him if more information was posted about the persons "missing". Børge Solem
spikeIs Hallingdal a town or villiage in one of the 6 divisions. His name was Ole Hoff which is I understand very common. Born 1863 and landed in New York June 1887.
BorgeHallingdal translated is "The Halling Valley" and within that valley there are a number of small communities. As you travel through the valley you will pass them one after the other, and they have their small community centers. From the old times they were seperate church parishes. Børge Solem
BorgeThis looks like it could be your family in the 1865 census: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f60619.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=2863&fulle=true&spraak=n Børge Solem
spikeBorge I have to apolgise for my post. I got confused from the one email. There was a correction that I did not see until later.
