Ship's Captains
Barbara J. WoodfordWhere can I find information on the captain of the Nordhavet (Nordhavel?) which sailed from Skien, Norway to Quebec in 1873? His name was C. Myhre.
BorgeThe information you provide is not much to go on. However, there are some possible candidates in the 1865 census at the Digitalarkivet: Christian Myhre, a sailor, age 18 born in Holmsboe Hans Christian Myhre, a sailor, age 21 born in Sande Christopher Myhre, a ship captain, age 37, born in Trondheim When you find out where your captain Myhre lived, you should find a lot of information in the Maritime inscription - registers of seamen Børge Solem
ninakarlsIn 1865 there was a ship's-captain called Johan Christophers. Myhre in Skien. He was 36 years old. Nina
BorgeThanks Nina, hm... I wonder how I missed him here is the link for the info on the Digitalarkivet Børge Solem
Barbara J. WoodfordThanks for your help Nina and Borge. On looking at the census though, I have a question perhaps you can answer. Johan Myhre is listed as Husfader, as is Christopher Myre. I take it that Husfader means head of the household. Is perhaps Johan the oldest son of Christopher? Thanks, Barbara
BorgeWe can only anticipate that he was, but the information given in the census does not give us any prove for it. Maybe we can give you further advice if you tell us more about what you are trying to find. Børge Solem
Barbara J. WoodfordBorge, It is true there is not much to go on. I am looking for a wife and children of C Myhre, ship's captain, one son named John or Peter Johnsen who emigrated to Chicago. John or Peter had a son in 1883, named Henry, my grandfather, and a daughter a little later in Chicago. I am having a hard time in the Chicago records since I don't know the first name of my great grandfather; my father thought his wife was Lena Bjorstead. The Myhre comes from a story passed down that the great great grandfather was a ship's captain by the name of "MEYER", who changed his name to "Johnsen". This causes a great irony since my Swedish great grandfather chose "Siljestrom" over his patronymic "Johnson". And to make it even more fun, I am looking for grandfather's cousins, since one of them was a female Wing Walker in the 1920's, and I'd like to know what relation she had to the family. Thanks again, Barbara Johnsen Woodford
