Need some help - Telemark
TuckerI have been trying to do some research on my Ggrandfather, Aslak Osmundsen. He came from Telemark, thought the Vinge/Rauland area. The LDS does not have church records on line yet for that area or time period (1820-1860. Census records are not much help because of the big time frame and knowing exactly who or where I am looking. I have been looking at the parish records on microfilm but can't really find anything definite. I think I found his brother's confirmation but no birth records for either. Since I am not familiar with that area, could someone give me some ideas of what parishes would be close that they could have either moved to or from? It seems as if they didn't stay in one place long. If there are some other websites that I could visit, I would very much appreciate that help. I believe that their fathers' name could be Osmund Knudsen. I enjoy reading this website and everyone seems so helpful. Even though it is frustrating at times, I really enjoy trying to find my relatives. Ann
TrondAnn, The fiche card set “Emigrants from Telemark” has 3 persons with the name of Aslak Osmundsen, all single for America: 1.Aslak Osmundsen Nestetul b. Nov. 11, 1821 in Vinje, for America in 1846 2.Aslak Osmundsen Tvedt Baptized Oct. 25, 1823 in Seljord, left from Kvitseid to America in 1843 3.Aslak Osmundsen Tvibakke, Vinje b. April 12. 1841 left for America in 1860 Trond Austheim
TuckerI'm sure that the Aslak Tvibakke is the right one, it's the same birth date and year that he left but there is also an Aslak Aasmundsen Tvibakken listed on the same set of fiche. He also has the same birth date and left the same year but it also states f. Flaaten i Vinje. How can I determine which one is correct? Could they be the same person? Aslak's last name started with an 'A' in Minnesota but changed to 'O' when they came to Kansas. Is there some website that I can find who actually lived on this farm when he left? and some other records that indicate where he was born besides the parish records? Thanks for you help, it is much appreciated. Ann
James E HegThere is a web site devoted to the Telemark area. Try <www.telelaget.com>. I hope this will help. Jim Heg Erik Bye is a friend of mine.
TuckerThank you for taking the time to post your reply. I'm sure that there is something there that will help. Thanks again Ann
TuckerStill not finding much. A nice website but not much helpful in the area I'm looking in that time frame. Am still open for more suggestions Thanks Ann
BriningHi Ann You could try posting a query on the Digitalarkivet Debate forum or join the Norway-L list http://members.tdn.com/dagwood/NorwayList.htm and post there. Someone at either list might be able to help. The Digatalarkivet has postings mainly in Norwegian but you can post in English. Carla
TuckerThank you very much! I'm open for anything. I'll definitely try that. Ann
ninakarlsAnn, I've seen several descendants searching for this Aslak. Like you, I find no record of his birth in the Vinje church records, and have tried searching the farm- and family history for the area: Vinje og Rauland. II-III / Rikard Berge. Stavanger, 1944. Unfortunately these books are based on "oral tradition" so the results are uncertain. The most promising passages found: Knut Aslaks. Berge (1755-1838) married Aasne Svalastoga (1766-1854) and had 2 daughters and 6 sons. 1801-census: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1801/f10834.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=1466&fulle=true&spraak=n The 3rd son ... <Aasmund Knutsson Svalastoga (1795-1847) of Haddeland, who later bought Tvitekkja, married Hæge (=Hege) Olavsd. (1800-) Lofthus and bought that farm from her parents (Vol. II, p. 503).> He later exchanged Lofthus for Flóten (=Flaaten), Bøgrend ... when Asmund died, times were hard. Hæge had to mortgage Tvitækkja and finallly sold it. Around 1861 she went to America with the children (Vol. III, p. 547-553). Unfortunately these children are not mentioned by name, but if one of them were Aslak, he could have used both Flaaten and Tvitekkja as his last name. He changed his patronym from Aasmund in Norway to Osmund in America for practical phonetic reasons, if you spell it Osmund, the American pronounciation will sound more like the Norwegian. The next step would now be to search for Aslak's mother in American records to see if she matches with Hæge. (The spelling of her first name may have changed in American records, and her last name might be Olavsen, Olsen, or Osmundsen.) Kviteseid, Tinn, Tokke (formerly Lårdal and Mo) and Seljord are municipalities in the area today, Vinje now includes Rauland.
TuckerThank you so much!! I see a few loose ends that might all come together from previous information, and this might bring it all together. I still want to verify through church records. Do you have any idea which parish would be the most logical place to start looking. Thanks again! Ann
