| Davidm | I am searching for my ancestors who emigrated in 1864 from near Tromso, Norway through Quebec, Canada into Minnesota, USA.
The information I have is that they lived near Tromso and that the father was a fisherman. The family name was Americanized/translated to GIANTVALLEY from the Norwegian: KJOMPDAHL (best guess as to spelling).
I do not know the names of the Father or Mother, but there were 5 children. The youngest was my great-grandfather, Bernard or Bainard, who was only a few months old (born January 18, 1854) when they left Norway. Hannah (female) was probably the oldest child, about 10 years old. There was another sister, Ellen, and two more brothers, Jeremiah and Martin.
From what I have seen of ship departure lists from this time, the best possibility I have found is the ship BERGEN which departed Tromso on May 15, 1864 and landed in Quebec on June 27 (ID 207). Is there a passenger listing available for this sailing?

There are no emigration records in Norway, and no surviving passenger lists for Canadian arrivals for 1864

| thelebrity | Check out the Kjempedahl farm in the 1865 census. Maybe the people living there are related to your great great grandfather's family. (Was Giantvalley the only name used by Bernard, or do you know of other surnames)

| Brining | Have you tried to get your great grandfathers death certificate? It could give you the names of his parents which would help in your search. If he died in Minnesota they have a death certificate search on line. http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm and you can order it on line. The Digitalarkivet (link below) has Baptisims, Marriages & Burials Balsfjord 1856-97 on line. (click on "area at that time" then Troms Balsfjord) There are births listed on the Kjæmpedal farm and a couple could be possibles for your family but hard to tell without the parents name.
Another place to look on the Digitalarkivet is the census for Norwegians in the US (click on categories)They have 1880 for Minnesota. You could find your ggrandfathers parents there.
