Dakbakm
jjI am wondering if Dakbakm is a Norwegian name? I have a Marie Dakbakm who was born about 1850, married Peter Tonseth and went to America in 1869. Thanks, JJ
BorgeAre you sure you got that name right, could it have been written some way like it was spoken phonetically, so that the spelling was changed? The way you write the name it looks strange. What is your source? Børge Solem
jjHi, Yes, the spelling is strange. Information was from a South Dakota USA website, on Births. File date was 16 October 1931 The first name would be Marie and she married Peter Corneliusen, I believe Tonseth. He was born in 1841, Roros ? Went to the USA in 1869.I'm thinking Marie wasn't from Norway. Thanks for your time. JJ
thelebrityYour Peder Corneliussen Tønset is here in the emigrant lists of Trondheim: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/EMITROND&variabel=0&postnr=4201&fulle=true&spraak=F And probably here in the 1865 census of Røros: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f61640&variabel=0&postnr=958&fulle=true&spraak=7 Dakbakm doesn't sound like a name anywhere in Europe.I think it must be some kind of americanized misspelling. What is the url of the site where you found it? Maybe it could give us some clues. PS Peder and Marie didn't marry in Norway, did they? Per Helge Per Helge Seglsten
jjThanks for the addresses. I'm thinking Peter and Marie met and married here in the States. She was born about 1850 and their first child born about 1873. If I'm not mistaken, Peter went to Minnesota and then to South Dakota. So, I'll trace the trail. JJ
jjHello again, Marie's maiden name was misspelled on one birth record. It's DAKBAKEN. That should help me. Thanks again and you all have a nice day. JJ
BriningHave you tried searching the 1880 census for Norwegians Living in the US at the digitalarkivet? It lists the birthplace of the individual and father's and mothers birthplace. Also if you can find them on the 1900 census it could give you the year Marie emigrated if she wasn't born in the US. Carla
thelebrityI made a search in the 1865 census for all people with name starting with Mar living on farms with name starting with Da and containing the letters bak in the name. I came up with two matches that could be your Marie, but this is more than a long shot. Anyway, here's the two candidates I've found: Maria Pedersdatter Dahlsbakken, Grue parish, Hedmark fylke born 1850 http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f60423.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=319&fulle=true&spraak=n Marie Andersdatter, Dalbak, Grue parish, Hedmark fylke, born 1854 http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f60423.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=6433&fulle=true&spraak=n If Marie's surname is norwegian I think the "baken"-part of the name is bakken and that the "Dak" part of the name is a misspelling. The spelling of names before 1900 was not very consequent, and you will find it to vary from source to source. But "Dk" is still a misspelling of a source, i think, and not a misspelling in a source. Farm names starting with "Dal" could also have been spelled "Dahl". And a woman baptized Marie could very well be called Maria or Mari in later records. Even if none of the above is your Marie you should have all this in mind in your search. Good hunting! Per Helge Seglsten
jjHi, I thought you might want to know I found Maria "Dakbaken" is; Anna Maria Dokkebakken, born 9 Sept.1848 at Southern Aurdal,Valdres, Norway. She and Peder Cornelius Tonseth were married in Goodhue County, Minnesota USA. I have received quite a bit of information on the family. I don't know if I told you, but I'm trying to help Henning Nergaard, originally from Roros, and now living in Sweden, find his family who emigrated to the USA.It is so wonderful to be able to give someone what I myself have received. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Thanks so much to all of you! "See" you all later. Juanita
thelebrityWell done! Per Helge Seglsten
