Nelson/Vigen/Flakne
EschmandI am researching the above names. My gggrandfather was Nils Olson born Dec. 1808 in Vermeland, Sweden and married Christine?? born Dec. 1814 in Vermeland. They had Nils Nelson born about 1850 and Gustav Nilsen Vigen born May 9, 1852. Nils Nelson is my great grandfather. He married Christine and they had Kristine, my grandmother March 17, 1887 in Bergen. She married John Flakne and lived in Plentywood, Montana until her death April 5, 1941. In her obit, it is stated she immigrated in 1905 but I cannot find her with the age given. Nothing is listed as far a siblings, etc. I am trying to locate any records for her in Norway. She supposedly immigrated to Adams, Walsh County, North Dakota. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BriningIs your Flakne any relation to the Flakne's in or emigrated to Beltrami MN? There is Flakne, John O. (Klevan), Beltrami, Minn. at this site http://home.online.no/~ergarber/slekt/new/ listed under address book 1914 so the site may have more information. Also there are several Flakne's listed on the Digitalarkivet leaving from Trondhiem. I'd almost given up on Kristine but gave it one last look and I think this is her leaving (http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/emikra1&variabel=0&postnr=103048&fulle=true&spraak=e) and her family in the 1900 census (http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1900/f00540&variabel=0&postnr=2943&fulle=true&spraak=e) The mothers name and Nils date of birth don't exactly match but there is the posibility of a second marriage or miss information. Carla
EschmandYes, this is the same family I am researching. I am so glad you responded. I have hit dead ends trying to locate Kristine's information. Didn't think of abreviating Nilsen - Nils. I have been searching the web for quite a while. All I have had to go on is the information I passed on earlier. She was/is my grandmother. My mother is Clara Alvida Flakne. Do you have more information? I would love to share. I have some information on the Flakne's and really appreciate you passing on the web site information. How does one go about confirming that this Nilsen family is the one we are looking for?
BriningThese aren't relations of mine. Just love to search. Anyway at the LDS http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp This looks like Nils (the census lists Fødested (his place of birth) as Jernskov Vermeland which I believe is the same as Jarnskog Varmland Nils <NILSSON> Sex: M Birth: 24 Sep 1844 Place: <Jarnskog, Varmland, Sweden> Christening: 28 Sep 1844 Place: Jarnskog, Varmland, Sweden Parents: Father: Nils OLSSON Mother: Cherstin NILSDR Your best bet is probably looking through the church records both in Norway and Sweden for information. You can get microfilm copies through the LDS. You can also try posting in the debate forum at the Digitalarkivet, there is a link below. Check out this site. It gives lots of tips and links for researching. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wgnorway/index.html Good Luck Carla
BriningForgot that I also found Gustav with wife Maren and son Nils (born in Norway) in the census for Walsh County. Here is a link to the page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nd/walsh/census/1900/196-10b.gif Carla
BriningOne more time! I think I have found Gustav emigrating. Again the ages don't match but they aren't always accurate and it does list Gustav, Marin, and Nils their place of residence was Aardalen which is in Buskerud which has a Vigen gard(farm). That is where the last name Vigen comes from. (http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/emikra1&variabel=0&postnr=90752&fulle=true&spraak=e) Carla
EschmandThank you so much for all the information. I am still trying to go through all of it. You mentioned Vigen is a farm in Buskerud. How do I find out more about that? This is the closest I have come to figuring out where Kristine Nelson/Flakne came from and other information.
BriningYour best bet would be a bygdebøker (Norwegian local history book) for the area if they have one. Check out "My Articles" on the rootsweb site. There are a couple of good articles there. Do you think that the brothers lived in the same area? Carla
BriningI did search Aardalen in the 1900 census and I didn't find anything that would match with Nils and Kristine. Carla
EschmandFrom what I have been told, their father re-married and the boys left home (Vermland, Sweden) when they were teenagers and went to Norway. My mother says her mother, Kristine, was born in Bergen, close to Oslo which I believe is not possible. Looking on the map, Bergen does not look close to Oslo to me. That is all she can remember, other than her mother came to the US and lived with an aunt, which leads me to Gustav and Maren, the best lead I have. Mom does not remember her mother talking about siblings - names - etc. I will check out your site for the books.... Thanks a bunch!!!!
BriningIt's looking more like this is your Kristine. Here is a birth record for her from the LDS site and that her mothers name was Berte Maria. If her mothers name came from oral history it is easy to get it confused. Kristine <NILSDATTER> Sex: F Event(s): Birth: 17 Mar 1887 Place: <Sor Aurdal, Oppland, Norway> Christening: 07 Apr 1887 Place: Sor Aurdal, Oppland, Norway Parents: Father: Nils NILSEN Mother: Berte Maria GUDBRANDSDR Carla
EschmandYOU ARE WONDERFUL! I have been searching and searching and searching...... I will definitely check out everything. I cannot thank you enough for your help. Ellen
BriningThank you. It is always fun when I can help and things come together. Here are two more links I think this would be Kristine's mother in 1865. From what I can tell Hedalen is a part of Sør Aurdal. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f60540&variabel=0&postnr=3855&fulle=true&spraak=e and I believe this might be Marin Vigen returning to America after a visit in 1919, she is listed as a widow http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/emikra1&variabel=0&postnr=182183&fulle=true&spraak=e Carla
EschmandNot sure if this is the Marin Vigen in my family. I show Gustav died in 1930. Do you speak Norwegian? I am having a tough time reading the information on the digitalist.
BriningYour right, Gustav is listed on the 1920 census alive and well http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nd/walsh/census/1920/196-09b.gif Seems his son has married and has several children. Have you gotten Gustav's obituary? It might mention something about a brother in Norway and Place?? I don't speak Norwegian but can read some and have a translator program that does a fair job. Carla
EschmandGood thinking.... I will look for an obituary for him.
EschmandForgot one thing. I was talking to a woman who knew Kristine (Nelson) & Ted Flakne. She mentioned Kristine said she was from Valish/Walish area (not sure of spelling or pronounciation). Does that sound familiar to you?
BriningHi It doesn't sound familiar Here is a great site that lists a lot of towns in Norway and shows where they are on a map if you want to browse and see if anything looks like it http://www.calle.com/world/norway/index.html And here is a site that has a list of archived ND papers. I wonder if there would be a wedding annoucement for Kristine. I don't know how common it was back then to put it in the paper. (That is if she got married in Adams) http://www.state.nd.us/hist/newshome.htm Carla
