| Sireenachao | I have traced my great great grandfather, and a woman listed as his housekeeper (in a 1900 census, Larvik, Norway) to Drøbek. They are both listed as being born there. My great great grandfather's name was Alexander Henrik Struck(born 1848), and the woman is Maren Helene Samuelsen(born 1836). I wonder if anyone knows anything about them, or could suggest a place for me to search (web site)? Unfortunately, I cannot read Norwegian, and this has hurt my search a great deal.

There are several good sources on the web, like the Digitalarkivet, which is easy to use even if you don' speak Norwegian. I did look up Alexander Struck in the online census.
From what the 1900 census for Larvik tells us he was born in 1848 at Drøbak, Akershus, and was a widower. His occupation was as a customs officer. Maren Helene Samuelsen was the housekeeper. His son Carl Wilhelm Struck was not present, he was either in New York or out at sea. He was a mate. Carl was born in Christiania in 1877. The other son listed was Bjarne Samuel Struck. He was born in 1886 at Glemminge in Smaalens.
There were also another person living in Fredrikstad in 1900, who most likely was another son of Alexander:
Alexander Struck born 1874 in Skjedsmoe. Occupation, customs officer. He was married to Caspara Hansine and had 4 children.
All of the assumed 3 children of Alexander Henrik was born on different location within a short period of time, which indicates that the family was moving around.
I find Wilhelm Struck and Bjarne Samuel Struck in the Emigration records for Larvik. Wilhelm listed in 1906 and 1907, and Bjarne Samuel listed in 1906.
Now back to Alexander Henrik Struck. By searching the 1865 census I get only one match; Aleksander Struk age 18, living in Drøbak. The place of birth is however given to be Christiania. He was listed with the Samuel Pedersen family, as a foster son:

Hans C. Samuelsen, son, sailor, age 25, b. Drøbak
Søren Samuelsen, son, sailor, age 21, b. Drøbak

The Struck name does not originate from norway, and my closes guess is that they came from Germany. In the 1801 census there were only 1 person by the name Struch, probably an army officer. M(I cant get him displayed in the online census) living at Fredrikshald fort in Smaalens.

I came over this page by searching google on my own name wich is Henrik Struck. I live in Norway. My fathers fathers father name was Heinrich Struck, I got his name. Heinrich came from germany after world war 1, he settled down in the norwegian town Trondhjem. He got a son that he named Fredrik Wilhelm Struck, Fredrik got a son that he named Roar Struck, and Roar is my father. I think Heinrich came from Schleswig Holstein in Germany, and I also think the name struck comes from Schleswig Holstein. My father Roar has tracked the Struck name back to the 11'th century in Germany. I think the name Struck means bunch of flowers. The Struck family shield has three red roses on it. The bunch of flowers symbolised that someone had the right to run a pub in Germany som centuries ago. |
