lpmlabsI'm trying to research my grandmother's arrival to the US from Norway. Her name is Anna Mathilda Olsen, born May 2,1902 in Bergen. I believe she arrived at Ellis Island on board the Stavengerfjord on April 12,1921. Any info would be appreciated on this data plus anything else that can be determined about her. TIA, Larry

thelebrityYou are right about 1924. You will find Anna Mathilde (Born in Bergstø, Os, living at the time in Søfteland, Os) here in the norwegian emigration lists of Bergen: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/EMIBERG&variabel=0&postnr=97834&fulle=true&spraak=F She is travelling with other Olsens. I dont know if they are related. But Johanne Olsen looks like she might be a sister of hers. Per Helge Seglsten
lpmlabsThis is fantastic news! Yes, Johanne is her sister. They were sponsored by another sister already in the states living in Chicago, IL. Now I just need to learn a few Norwegian words in order to make sense of the data on the link you supplied! If I could impose, what is the difference between "Bergstø Os" and "Bergstø Samnanger" ? Thanks again; you've made my week. Larry
thelebrityI would think it's no difference really. Os is probably more accurate though. Bergstø is a farm in Os, and Os lies in the Samnanger area, I suppose (haven't checked the geograpics). Both Os and Samnanger lies in Hordaland fylke. Per Helge Seglsten
thelebrityI am trying - unsuccessfully - to find Johanne at Bergstø in the 1900 census. What is the name and birth year of the sister that sponsored Johanne and Anna Mathildes trip? Do you know when she emigrated from Norway? Per Helge Seglsten
thelebrityHey, I found them after all! They've probably been moving around alot as their father Johan Olsen worked as a foreman for road- and rail construction teams. Here they are in the 1900 census: http://www.rhd.uit.no/ftsoek/ftsoek.asp?kommando=bosted&ftaar=1900&spraak=norsk_bokmål&kommnr=1251&kretsnr=002&bostnr=0008&leilnr=00 or if you prefer the Digitalarkivet version: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1900/f01251&variabel=0&postnr=414&fulle=true&spraak=8 And here is Aletta's emigration record from 1914: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/EMIBERG&variabel=0&postnr=79761&fulle=true&spraak=F Per Helge Seglsten
thelebrityI've been trying to find Johannes Olsen from Hyllestad and Sisilia J from Os in the 1865 census. It's not possible to determine excact who it is, as there are several possible candidates for both of them. A marriage record for Os is needed to determine for sure who they are in the census. Be aware that Sisila could be spelled in several different ways in the censuses, as this possible candidate is a good example of: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f61243&variabel=0&postnr=3006&fulle=true&spraak=7 I would suggest a query at www.digitalarkivet.no. The users understand english and a lot of people are getting good help. Of course you should post the same query here. Per Helge Seglsten
lpmlabsI have a letter translated from Norwegian to English with the following info. Spelling could be wrong since the letter is not print and the handwriting is "challenging". Refering to church records at Bruvik Osten Johannes Olsson Axe was married 2 times. First was Anne Boge from Bruvik. They had 7 children: Olaus, August, Maria, Berta, Rasmus, Aletta, Edvard. Second was Anna Seselia (also have it as Anna Seselia Johannesdtr from Bordal). They had 5 children: Elene 2/28/18??, Johanna 6/22/1897 (my great aunt that I knew very well), Jenny Amalia 12/29/1898, Anna 1902 (mt grandmother) and Ingeborg 1907. Anna Seselia may have a birth year of 1860. Interestingly, the name on Alette's immigration info, Johnsen, is the name of my grandfather who also came from Norway, same area. He married my grandmother here in the states. Does this help? This sure is interesting but without a grasp of the language, using the Norwegian sites is difficult. Again thanks for the links. Larry
thelebrityIt sure helps! Here Østen Johan is in the 1865-census. He is probably not related to any of the other people at the farm as he is listed as a foster child. But it should be easy to find him in the birth records of Hyllestad. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f61413&variabel=0&postnr=1493&fulle=true&spraak=7 I couldn't find Anne Sisilie at any of the Børdal farms in Os. The closest I got was an 8 year old Anne Sesilie Johansdatter at the farm Grønsdal in Os: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f61243&variabel=0&postnr=3658&fulle=true&spraak=7 The reason Alette's surname is Johnsen is because norwegian naming pattern was changing around the time the sisters left Norway. Up til around hen the patronym had been the most common naming pattern, and according to this all Johannes' children should have been named Johannesen/Johannesdatter. Around 1920 Norway got a "naming law" which "semented" the patronym practice, so that if the Aletta and her sisters took their father's patronym, Olsen, then Olsen would be the family name from then on. In this case Aletta was using the traditional naming pattern, while Anna Mathilde and Johanne used the modern pattern. In the cities, though, you will find that the patronyms were abandoned decades earlier than on the countryside. Per Helge Seglsten
thelebrityHere is Østen Johan's migration record from 1876, when he moved from Hyllestad to Haus. http://www.sffarkiv.no/sffbasar/default.asp?p=result&paging=yes&ptype=single&db=dbflytte&page=1&sql=prestegjeld%5Fid+%3D+1413++AND+low%5Fforenamn+like+%27%F8sten%25%27+++ORDER+BY+forenamn%2C+etternamn&appinfogard=&appinfostol=&appinfourl=&id=3 Per Helge Seglsten
lpmlabsHere is one link to Anna which gives her birth in 1860. http://home.world-online.no/alfjamne/Names2.htm and this shows the marriage to Johan. http://home.world-online.no/alfjamne/10113.htm but has no further details on Johan. Does this match the record you found on Anna do you think?
