Emigration from Bergen
palenes	My great grandfather and his family Thomas Knudsen Smelvaer, are registered as emigrants from Bergen on June 8, 1888. When looking at the Emigrant ships from Norway List for that period, the only agent listed for Bergen is C. A. Gundersen representing the Holland America Line. When reviewing the ships list, only two ships are noted as leaving Bergen and arriving at Hull, with no details available. In previous years some ships left Trondheim and stopped in several Norwegian ports including Bergen, enroute to Engalnd. I am trying to trace MY ggfathers voyage to America but do not know what route or arrival port he may have taken. I can surmise that he arrived in the USA or Canada between the 17th and 25th of June and can start my search as such, but I am interested in finding out more about the departures from Bergen during this time frame if possible. Trond	Hello, I have updated the year of 1888 today with departures by the Wilson Lines ship from Bergen via Stavanger to Hull. Also some agents have been added. thelebrity	Smelvær is a farm in Askøy just outside Bergen. So he probably went straight from Bergen when he emigrated. If you want information about Thomas Knudsen and his ancestors you should contact the query forums at Digitalarkivet, as the Bergen Statsarkiv has computerized the baptism records of Askøy. I haven't been able to pinpoint him or his family in the 1865 census. Per Helge Seglsten

ninakarls	Thomas Knuts. was from the farm Værøy, in Askvoll, his parents were Knut Peders. Værøy 1816-58 married to 1842 Susanne Tomasd. Værøy c1822-1903. According to Askvoll bygdebok Vol. IIB /Abraham Loftheim, 1972, Tomas was born 1847. His wife was daughter of Anders Villums. Færøy. Here is Knut (born 1816)'s father's family at Værøen in the 1801 census: Susanne Knudsd Wife's mother 70 Widow Kaarkone Knud Larsen Husbond 50 Farmer Artelina Rasmusd Wife 58 Peder Knudsen son 23 Enroull. mat.(in the navy) Ales Knudsd daughter 25
Mary Ann	I'm new to this board so please excuse me if I'm not following protocol. How did you learn of your grandfather's date of departure from Bergen? We believe (from Civil War enlistment papers) my grandfather entered this country in July, 1856 and that he departed from Bergen. He may have come via Canada. We are tryingto trace hinm back to Norway. Any suggestions?
