I can't find my family...Olsen and Morset
lorithompsonI have a birth certificate listing my great grandparents as Sarah Olsen or Olson, born around 1880 in Norway and Liebert Morset born around 1874 in Norway. I don't have any other information on them except that at the time of my great grandmothers birth, she was thier eleventh child and Liebert was a Pastor. I have an address on the birth certificate that shows she was born at home, but when I go to that address in Chicago on the census, there is an Italian family living there! I am at a loss. What can these names be? I can't find them anywhere. Thanks for any help. Lori
thelebrityI haven't been able to find Sara or Liebert in norwegian censuses or emigrant records. But there are Morset farms in the fylkes of Sør Trøndelag and Møre og Romsdal. Liebert would probably origin from one of these farms. Do you have any idea about when they came to USA. What year is the birth certificate issued? Per Helge Seglsten
lorithompsonThe birth certificate is on of one Sarah's children here in the US, Gertrude Morset. She had a sister Marie, and a brother Victor. Of the 11 children, we only know of those three. Gertrude was born at home at 518 W. 81st St. in Chicago on Dec 29, 1922. I tried that address on the 1930 census, and they weren't living in that house. I can't pull anything up on the 1920 census under these names. I am going to try an earlier census. What I can't figure out is how I can't find a pastor, his wife and 11 children. I am wondering if there was a Norwegian congregation in that area of Chicago that he may have served in the church at. What would his religion be, Catholic? Then I could contact the parish if it still exists. I am going to go back to the 1930 census, there was an Olson family living a block or two over that may have been related, but I am not sure. It lists Sweden as the country of the parents. Should I take it for granted that they are from the same place it Sarah listed herself as coming from Norway on a birth certificate? Another thought is that the kids weren't all born in Chicago, maybe they came here since some of Sarah's family was here and moved to another state or something...Marie, Gertie and Vic all died in Chicago. I have mass cards on them. I was also going to try to find obits at the library, but there are no libraries around me that do microfilm, do you believe that? Thanks for the help so far. It is a start. Lori ( =
momcwillYou might try the National Archives and Records Administration, Great Lakes Region, 7558 South Pulaski Road, Chicago, Illinois 60629-5898. I wrote them concerning my grandparents who were Norwegian immigrants to Chicago. They were able to send me the naturalization record on my grandfather. I, however, was able to give them birthdate and approximate date of entry. Also you might try Lutheran records. My grandparents were members of a Lutheran church in Chicago. Olsen is also my granparents' last name. They immigrated from Kristiansund, Norway. Mary McWilliams
BriningOn the Illinois Statewide Death Index, 1916–1950 there are 3 Morset (including a Sarah)and 4 Morsette all out of Chicago. If you can get a copy of Sarah's or Liebert's death certificate it could give you more information Click Here Carla
BriningHere is a website that has Lutheran Churches of Chicago and some list the pastors. http://www.elca.org/os/archives/chicagochurches/chicago.html The main religion of Norway was Lutheran so it is possible that your great grandfather was a Lutheran Minister. Carla
thelebrityThere also is a lot of Morset and Morseths to be found at the Social ecurity Death Index. ere you have the Morseths: Per Helge Seglsten
lorithompsonThank you for the information, I have sent off for death certificates on Sarah Morset and Edward Morset. If you go to the Illinois Archives website and the person you are researching died between 1916 and 1945 in Chicago, you can request FREE death certificates, but only two at a time to an address. In the social security index I did find relatives. When I am ready to jump overseas I will be back, I am now searching through other census' trying to find the family.
BriningOne note on the Illinois death certificates. I read on the Norway list that they are really backed up so you may have to be patient to receive your copy. Also they are going to start charging since they have had so many requests. Carla
lorithompsonFigures, just when we thought there was some free information still out there! (laugh).... Thanks for the tip. I am going to have to get my requests in quick, just have them sent to everyone I know! (laugh)... Lori
lorithompsonI am having no luck at all finding my great grandparents, but the certificates I have ordered have started to arrive. My greatgrandfather is listed on one as Sivert Morset, and his wife was Asora Olson. On another birth certificate they are Siebert Morset and Sarah Olson. I know they had 11 children, but only know of four. One of the children, Ruth Morset, I cannot find dates on, and the other Victor E Morset...his death certificate order came back to me that they couldn't find the birth certificate from 1919. How frustrating.
BriningHi Lori There is an Asora Ols. age 23, going to Chicago in 1903 It lists her as unmarried but I believe traveling with a child Ingborg age 2. Ticket is paid in America so maybe she is going to be with your great grandfather. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMITROND&variabel=0&postnr=102581&fulle=true&spraak=n Carla
BriningHi Lori This is probably Asora working as a servant in the 1900 census http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f01716&variabel=0&postnr=1597&fulle=true&spraak=e Carla
BriningShe is also on the Ellis Island Records and says she is going to her parents Margerete Olson. This is a site the is easier to use when searching Ellis Island http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html She is listed as Asora Olsson Carla
lorithompsonThanks again for all of your help!!! I have spent so much time trying to find her, and once again the spelling was what threw me off. Her name is never the same twice. I am trying to find her family on US census' now. Thanks for the help!!!
lorithompsonWell, with all of your help, I was able to find 8 of the Morset children here in the US after the immigration of Sarah Olsson and her daughter to America. I cannot find anything on Sivert Morset, his immigration or death or anything. I did find a descendent of Sivert from one of his 11 children from a different line than mine, though, and hope to glean some new information. His grandfather was Sivert's son who just recently passed away. This is the best link I have to finding him. Thanks again for the help.
BorgeThe people you are looking for seams to be from the Levanger area of Nord-Trøndelag. They have a group of local historians with great interest for emigration history in Levanger. I would try an e-mail with the information you have to the local library: Levanger Library Let then know about your problem, and ask then if they can be so kind as to connect you with someone in the local historic society that might be able to help. My guess is that you will get a lot of help [;)]
