jwiborg | Hello Pattie,
I think I found the ancestor you're looking for...!
Morten Ernst Hansen, Tapetser (=carpenter), male, not married, 18 yrs old, left Christiania (Oslo) on May-06-1904. Destination was Chicago.
Nobody was named "Horten" in the 1900 census for Norway.
And your "Horten" was also a carpenter! This can't be just a coincidence...!
Look here for the Emigrants from Oslo in 1904:

In the 1900 census; the only possible person I could find was living in the city of Tønsberg in Vestfold county.
You can find the census from the link above (click on "1900" at the top of the page).
1900 census, Norway, Vestfold, Tønsberg, street=Gunarsby Sven Foyns Gade:
Hans Hansen, Housefather, married, worker, born 1831
Hanna Hansen, Housemother, married, cleaning woman, born 1849
Hanna Karoline Hansen, residence=New York, Daughter, not married, servant girl, born 1872
Adolf Johan Hansen, residence=not known("not decided"), Son, not married, Sailor, born 1874
Hans Hansen, residence=New York, Son, not married, Sailor, born 1877
Oskar Hansen, residence="on the sea" Son, not married, Sailor, born 1880
Oskar Marinius Olsen, residence=New York, Son, not married, Sailor, born 1880
Maren Olava Hansen, Daughter, not married, factory worker, born 1883
Morten Hansen, Son, not married, born 1887. YOUR MAN?
Harald Hansen, Son, not married, born 1888
Ingeborg Hansen, Daughter, born 1893
So your "Horten Hansen" looks to be the son of
Hans Hansen, born 1831 and Hanna Hansen, born 1849.
And he had already in 1900 brothers and sisters living in N.Y.!
One strange thing to mention is that Oskar Marinius' last name is Olsen. He might be adopted.
However, one thing to mention at last is the search on http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/.
One "Morten Hansen, Norwegian", arrived on January 14, 1904, age: 19y 2m, Shop of travel: Belita.
I don't know if this is the person you're looking for, but I hope not..., 'cause the other Morten Hansen left Norway 4 months later... :-)
Well, I hope this helps you out a bit...
//Jan Peter
