| marticouch | I am writing a book about my grandmother and her voage from Egersund Norway to America. A lot of what I know is what I was told , I would like to know if anyone knows of a sight I can go to for the information about the landing. ie: how much money they had to have on them to stay, how long were they kept at Ellis Island before they were allowed to continue their trip.those kinds of questions. thank you ..martha Couch.

| Borge | I was just reading a handbook for emigrants issued in 1914. One of the headings read:
"What amount of money do one have to bring along"
The answer was:
"Neither the immigration law or the authorities does state any minimum amount to bring to be permitted to land in the US. Every case is judged and threated individually. According to experience one should anticipate that $25 or 100 N-Korner will be sufficient. One must also take in consideration what kind of amount of money is needed to be able to reach the final destination in the US."
