Skjelset or Skjeset Farm
stevej I am seeking info on the Skjelset/ Skjeset farm . Supposedly in the Vang, Hedmark area. My GGgrandfather, Kristian Skjelset/Skjeset and wife Marie Mikkelsdatter are listed in the 1900 census for Vang, but I can not find the farm name listed anywhere to dig any further back. Any assistance on location or records would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
jwiborgHi, could it be this one? "Christian Engbreds.", 22 years, lives on the farm "Schjeseth nedre" in the 1965 census. That looks to be your "Kristian Skjeset" from the 1900-census. Christian Engebredsen is the son of Inger Johannesdatter, 66 years of age in 1965. She is prob. born in 1800, because most of the time you will have to calculate from 1866 when it comes to the 1865 census. His father "Engebred" is not listed on the farm, so he is prob. dead. Christian's brother Anders Engbredsen is running the farm in 1865. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f60414.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=6025&fulle=true&spraak=e In 1865 you have the farms Schjeseth nedre (=Schjeseth lower) and Schjeseth øvre (=Schjeseth upper). In 1900, the farms are called Skjeset vestre (Skjeset west), Skjeset østre (Skjeset East) and Skjeset mellom (Skjeset middle). The farm "Schjeseth nedre" in 1965 and "Skjeset vestre" in 1900 could be the same.... //Jan Peter
stevejThis is very interesting! Schjeseth is a spelling I had not found yet. What would the translation of " hjelper Broderen med Gaardsbruget " be. He was listed as " Gaardbruger " in the 1900 census.
stevej I was able to check out some details, and they seem to confirm what you were able to find out. I cannot thank-you enough for the info. The only thing I can not find is a listing for the farm to try and find a Bygebok. None of the sites that I can find has a listing for the farm using any of the spellings that we found. Would you have any ideas? Again, thank-you very much.
jwiborgHi again; "hjelper Broderen med Gaardsbruget" means "helps his brother with the farming". "Gaardsbruget" is a farm, and a "Gaardbruger" is a farmer. This is what I found about "Bygdebøker" for the Vang district: Hamar is a city, and therefore no bygdebok has been written for it. However, the community of Vang, which is now part of Hamar, did have a bygdebok written for it. Vangsboka By Odd Stensrud Published by Vang historielag 2 volumes (both farm histories and genealogy) Volume 1. G. nr. 178 - 194 Published 1983 (covers farm numbers 178 through 194) Volume 2. G. nr. 153 - 177 Published 1988 (covers farm numbers 153 through 177) Note: Volume 3 is being written by Odd Stensrud and Ole-Jacob Tomter. The local government of Hamar will later decide if there will be made a volume 4 and 5. Skjeset vestre has g.nr 40 (Gardsnr = "land number"). This means that Skjeset is NOT in Volume 1 or 2. I suggest you contact the Vang historywriter Odd Stensrud for further information. I didn't find any email address for him, but "Vang historielag" should be able to help you: http://home.no.net/vanghist/ //Jan Peter
