Emigrants from Trondheim to Alberta
RonnyMy gggrandmother was Guri Knudsen (Knudsdatter). She was born in 1829 and in the 1900 Census she lived in Trondheim with two of her children, Fredrik and Ingeborg. Guri emigrated on 12 august 1903 with her daughter Ingeborg Bruaas (married) born 1875 and her children Katarina Bruaas, born 1901, and Johan Bruaas, born 1903. They left Trondheim on the ship Tasso/Allan Line for Wetaskewin, Alberta, and after this I have no information on them. Where did this ship arrive ? Can anyone help me find some information about these people ?
jwiborgThe ship "Tasso" was on a regular route between Trondheim and Hull, England. (via Kristiansund, Aalesund, Bergen and Stavanger). From Hull, the emigrants usually travelled by train to Liverpool, and from there to New York or Boston. S/S Tasso (1) was built in 1852 and wrecked in 1886. S/S Tasso (2) was built in 1890, and sold to Greece in 1913. Tasso (2) I could not find any of your names on Ellis Island Records That could mean that they arrived in Boston....? Or that their arrival is missing on Ellis Island. //Jan P.
jeanyCould it also be possible that the port of arrival might be Quebec, Canada
BriningQuebec probably was the port of arrival and then train to Wetaskewin. In Local History Book Index: Salute the Pioneers - Round Hill - Camrose there is listed BRUCE (BRUAAS), George BRUCE, Gust BRUCE, Ingvald BRUCE, Jens J. BRUCE, John James BRUCE, Martin BRUCE, Olaf BRUCE, Tom So maybe the name changed from Buaas to Bruce. Jens J. could be Jens Jensen Bruaas which I am assuming from the emigrant records is Ingeborg's husband. This is the site where I did the search http://www.rootsweb.com/~abarchiv/index.htm and it also has a link for lookup volunteers. This book is in Camrose county. Here is a link to the Alberta Genweb site which could be helpful http://users.rootsweb.com/~canab/index.html
BriningI found a Jens J Bruaas filing 2 homestead claims. http://www.archives.ca/02/02011102_e.html Type Bruaas in names and it will bring up the records. I will see if I can figure out where they are located since the record doesn't say what county. Also no dates Carla
BriningI'm pretty sure this is in the county of Camrose since the city is in the same township. If you want to read more about the homestead records go here http://www.rootSweb.com/~cansk/Saskatchewan/homestead.html It is for Saskatchewan, not Alberta but informative. Carla
AdeleThe Homesteads NE 36-47-18-W4 and NE 2-48-18-W4 are both very near Round Hill, which is in Camrose County. The Camrose County GenWeb site Cemeteries has information on the burials of a number of people named Bruce. In the Skudesness Norwegian Evangelian [spelling error] Church Cemetery there is Jens J. BRUCE died 8 November 1949 at 73 years old and Ingeborg BRUCE died 12 April 1957 at 82 years old. I know a Bruce from that part of Alberta and will try to speak with him in the next couple of days to see if he or his family, know of Ingeborg and Guri Knudsdatter. If this is your Ingeborg I think we can find a great deal on her and her family. Jeg skal skrive når jeg lære mer her borte. Adele
RonnyThank you all for your help ! I´m quite sure this must me the right Ingeborg and Jens Bruaas (Bruce). Also, buried in the Skudesness Norwegian Evangelian Church Cemetery, as Jens and Ingeborg, is a John M. Bruce. He died in 1984, 81 years old. Ingeborg had a son, Johan Bruaas, born 1903. This might be him... To be sure about the name of Ingeborg´s husband, I will try to find out about their wedding. They probably married in Trondheim between 1900 and 1903. Ronny
sabruceHello Ronny, it was so good to hear from you. We undertand that you are looking for your grandmother (or was it great grandmother) Guri Olsen and her daughter Ingaborg who married Jens Bruaas. Jens and Ingaborg were my grandfather and grandmother. My father's name was Johan, the little boy who was three years old when he immigrated. The family is all buried in the family cemetary at Skudesness, a little cemetary east of Camrose. You solved one mystery for us as there is a little grave in that cemetary with Baby Bruce on the headstone, it was probably Katrina. I had five brothers and sisters all living in Alberta, four alive, Janet, the baby died in October of 2002. I don't know that much about the Fredrick Olsen family, but do know where some of the children are. One grandson is a mastro with the symphony in Edmonton. Since you are from Tronheim, one of Ingeborg's sister's grandchild lives in Trondheim by the name of Inger-Kirsten Sandvik. If you are interested in contacting her, please let me know and I will provide her e-mail address to you. Where do you fit into the picture. Whose child are you. My name is Roger Bruce, the name Bruaas having been changed by Immigration upon their arrival in Canada. Please let me hear from you. Roger Bruce Please let me hear from you. My Please
AdeleA direct descendant of Guri and Ingeborg has been found. I replied to Ronny via email. Small world! Adele
sabruceHi Ronnie, sorry misinformation in first e-mail. My dad was 3 months old not 3 years old when he arrived in Canada. Roger
