Grandfather left Bergen
Mary Ann	My paternal grandfather arrived in this country in July, 1856 from Bergen according to his Civil War enlistment papers. We have been unable to learn anything about parents and siblings. We think he may have come into this country by way of Canada. He used the name Louis Nelson though we think his given name was Lars Fusi Nelson. Does anyone have access to and the language fluency to search Digitalarkivet for him? Please reply to me via email. Thanks in advance for any help.
Brining	Do you know what year your grandfather was born? There is a Fuse in Hordland where he could have come from but the census records are from 1801 and 1865. Emigration protocols on the Digitalarkivet started in 1867 so there isn't much on line in the time frame your grandfather emigrated to search although the Digitalarkivet is adding records all the time. Borge	As Carla points out there are no emigration records in Norway as early as in 1856, however at t5he Digitalarkivet there is a register of [url="http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=n&filnamn=arkivverket/passprot&spraak=e&eigar=Digitalarkivet"]Passports issued for travel to America from Bergen[/url]. Only a minor part of the emigrants are listed in this register, as most emigrants would get their moving permits from the church. There are out-migrants lists for many parishes, which are filmed. (See also "Time-line to records", Records to Norwegian emigrants - link below) I did not find your "Lars Fusi Nelson" in the passport register, however there were several people from Fuse registered on May 13, and that fits with the departure of the brig [url="http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=haade"] Hakon Adelsten[/url], Capt. Simonsen from Bergen May 15 to Quebec July 12. Maybe your grandfather was traveling with the other group from Fuse. Børge Solem
ninakarls	The given name Fuse is found in Hosanger, Hamre and Lindaas parishes just north of Bergen. It originally means "firstborn" (son).
Mary Ann	I may have found the family I'm looking for under the name Nielsen ANielsen family arrived in New York in 1855. I do not find the ship listed under arrivals at Castle Gardens,NY. Where would I find records of arrivals at other New York ports? Thanks for the help I've been offered so far.
