Bakken and Kandal names from Norway to Alberta
KhristianeI am looking for any information on the family names "Bakken" and "Kandal" they both immgrated from different areas in Norway and came to Alberta Canada. Bakken is my Grandfather's name and his parents (Nils and Ingeborg (Svien) Bakken) came from Norway and ended up mostly in farming towns in Alberta. This was a farming family, they emigrated in 1905 area. Kandal is my grandmother's name (her parents Knut Olson and Nellie ( Lofthus) Kandal ) and they as well came from Norway but they travelled through Canada ( Saskatchewan , Alberta, British Columbia) and through Minnesota and Great Falls Montana. My Grt. Grandfather Kandal was a minister so they went to areas that he could minister at. If anyone is familiar with these names or can help me please get in touch with me. Thank you Edited by - Khristiane on 31/01/2003 15:50:12 Edited by - Khristiane on 31/01/2003 19:34:01
anvilheadtownHi there-You can find some info on Bakkens at some good databases on www.genealogy.com and www.rootsweb.com. type in the surname of Mandt and browse through the results. You will find Dakota Territory Norwegians Ancestors of the Dakota Territory Norwegians The Felland, Mandt, and Reindal Families Many of my ancestors (lived in Canada)were Bakkens but we know them by other names such as Dalen, Reindal, Felland, etc... because these are farm names that changed when people moved to different farms, like we change our addresses when we move. You can also find them under: Bakke Bachen and there were Bakken farms in other areas of Norway so it may take a bit of digging for you to be sure if this is the right branch. Best to you, cindy cindy k muggli
