What ship did they come on?
Betty Jean EllingsonI am looking for the passenger list for my great-grandfather Jon Fredrickson Stjernegjerd who came to America in May of 1882. He was 45 years old at the time. He came with his wife Kari Lassesdatter Afet and three children, Marta, Guri, and Fredrick. They were from Vangsness, Sogn, Norway. Any help that you could give me would be appreciated. I do not know what port they would have left from--Bergen possibly? Thanks Betty Jean Ellingson Betty Jean Ellingson

Betty Jean EllingsonThank you so much for all of the details and information. I was wondering if I could get a copy of the actual ship list that you received the information from. They are so fun and give information about destinations of immigrants also. If I could get that, I would appreciate it!! Thanks Betty Jean Ellingson
Betty Jean EllingsonHi! I have a question regarding the question I posted in February. I was wondering if you could give me the website of the ship list of John Fredriksen Vangsnaes and his wife Kari Lassesdatter. One of the daughters, Marta, is not on the list and was the oldest child and I was also wondering if a man named Lasse Berdal accompanied the Fredricksens on their journey. That is what my family speculates but no one knows for sure. He married one of the Fredricksen daughters when he arrived in America. Thanks so much.

Betty Jean EllingsonHi Jan!! Thanks so much for the information you posted for me today!! It answers so many questions for me!! Your help is unbelievably valuable!! Are there destinations on any of the ship's passenger lists?? I just don't know who Marta would have come to stay with if she came by herself...... [:I][:I][:I] Thanks again for your help. It is much appreciated.....
jwiborgHi again Betty Jean, the online Ellis Island database starts from 1892, so you won't find her there. There may exists some microfilm records for the arrival. It's hard to say where she was headed without the manifest, but here are some suggestions. The have all the lastname of Vangsnęs, are from Balestrand, and emigrated before Martha... Maybe there is an aunt or uncle within this list? [:)]
  • 1875-May-4: Johannes Olssen Vangsnęs, m, unmarried, born 1855, 20y, Balestrand.
  • 1876-Jun-3: Lasse Anfindsen Vangsnęs, m, unmarried, born 1856, 20y, Balestrand.

Betty Jean EllingsonHi Jan and thanks for your help. You spent alot of time on that list and I will print it......thanks..... but i don't recognize any of those names. Jon had the name Stjerngjerd before he came to America and maybe that is a farm name?....and maybe if I could trace emigrants from that farm I could get some insight. Are the manifests not available yet or were they destroyed?? Thanks again for your help. A friend in North Dakota appreciates you!! [:D]
Jo Anne SadlerOn the Emigrants from Bergen list, it indicates the shipping line as Cunard. Using the information from this site (Norway Heritage), "Agents & Shipping Lines", in 1882 Cunard ships sailed from Bergen to Hull, train to Liverpool and then a final ship to either New York or Boston. Many times ships stopped at more than one port, first New York and then Boston, usually the list will separate the groups. Sometimes the passenger manifests will list final destinations but most times it is just United States/North America, very generic. Since you know the exact date they emigrated, you can rent the New York and Boston passenger list microfilms at a local Family History Center, on inter-library loan or by mail from the National Archives, www.nara.gov.
saamiParilious (peter) Olson Hindrum *gg granfather and his mother Marie Johannasdatter came to U.S.A. in 1897. I was told by an aunt that they arrived on the S.S. Bavarian but from the research I have done the S.S. Bavarian, it was not built until 1899? Peter was born in 1874, Verran, Norway. I was also told that Peter and Marie arrived in Minnisota from Leksvik, Norway. Any help would be great[:D]
Betty Jean EllingsonHi -- Thanks for your help and thanks for the tip on contacting NARA and the website. This forum is invaluable!! Thanks.....
Betty Jean EllingsonHi!! I have noted that there is a post on my inquiry re: a Peter Hindrim that I think was intended to be a separate inquiry. It is from Saami and two posts back from this one. Saami had a question that hasn't been addressed yet. Thanks..... [:I]
