(Norway or Canada) I know that they emigrated to the US or Canada but they eventually ended up in Alberta Canada Nils died on July 9 1955 where ? presummed in Alberta Canada I have looked in many places but I cannot find anything. If I could get any help it would be appreciated Thank you Khristiane
thelebrityI can't be sure, but this is a good candidate: At the farm Svien in Vang parish, Oppland fylke (Valdres) the following family is living according to the 1900 census: Niels Knudts. born 1878, his wife, Ingeborg Endresdtr. born 1876, and their child Endre Niels. born 09.09. 1900. I haven't found them in the Oslo/Christiania emigration lists, but these lists are not yet complete. Maybe you'll find them at Ellis Island on the web if you search on the patronyms. There is, by the way three Bakken farms at Vang. At one of them a Knut, who could be Niels's father is living. Good hunting! Per Helge Seglsten
KhristianeThank you so much for finding out some possible information if it leads anywhere I will contact you. The dates and names are a definant possiblity I will check with my grandfather (Nils's son) and see if the name variations are a possiblity? Talk to you soon Khristiane
nozzlehead5There is a Nils A. Bakken born Dec 12, 1805 died April 9, 1886 who was married to Turi Bakken buried in the South Cemetery in Northwood, North Dakota. Given the ages, it would be more likely a grandfather to who you are looking for. I'm pretty sure that Nils and Turi came straight from Norway, so I don't know if this is helpful at all. I do know someone who knows more about the family and would be able to give me names of their children and grandchildren if you are interested.
Jo Anne SadlerFound them on the Ellis Island database as follows: Arrived in NY on March 2, 1903 from Liverpool. Ship Celtic, all listed below from Valders. Nils Knudsen Bakken-24, Ingeborg Bakken Endresdatter-26, Endre Nilsen Bakkenn-2, Guro Nilsdatter Bakken-6 months, Gjertrud Raiersdatter Svien-49-widowed, Valjer Endresen Svien-22 (brother to Ingeborg?), Boje Olsen Myhre-22 (?), Anders Knudsen Bakken-27 (brother to Nils). Gjertrud Raiersdatter Svien was listed on the 1900 census with Nils & Ingeborg and she is easily found on the 1865 census at the Svien farm. There are three Bakken farms in the 1900 census, #77 has a Knut and Guro as head of household, these names track with the childrens names. Emigrants from Vang frequently traveled from Bergen but I could not locate them on the Bergen immigrants database. There is an American Bydgelet for the Valdres area. www:valdressamband.org. They have all the farm history books and church records on microfilm, including the moving out registers. If you are a member ($10.00) per year they will do extensive research for you, you already have a lot of information to start with. They have helped me greatly in the past.[^]
