Hansen Family in Hidra
kristine123I am trying to find some information on my Great grandparents and their children. G Grandparents names were Emanuel and Oline Hansen. Year of Birth is 1842 and 1847. Children's names were Sofie,(1879) Emilie,(1881) Hans O.,(1884) Theoline,(1888 and Enok O.(1894) They may have had more children that I know nothing about. Sofie is my grandmother, she resided in Canada. Emilie resided in Brooklyn NY with her brother Enok. He went back to Norway in the early 1950's. I found them in the 1900 census. Municipality number is 1042. Name of domicile: Hummeraas. I cannot trace them back any further than 1900. There Birth place is in Hittero LM (Lister and Mandal) Also, would anyone know what Parish they would have been in? Edited by - kristine123 on 22/03/2003 00:14:46
BriningThis is a good canidate for Emanuel in the 1865 census. Reinert Emanuel is the right age and is living on the Hummeraas farm. Click Here In 1900 the parish is Hiterø and in the 1865 census Næs (Nes) and Hiterø At the LDS http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp if you search for Reinert Hansen, there is a Christening and birth record for Reinert Emanuel Hansen in Nes, Vest-Agder, Norway. The birth record lists his marriage to Oline Bentsdtr. 12/17/1877. Carla
BriningThis would be Oline Beentsdatter (I think Bentsdatter would be the correct spelling) in the 1865 census Click Here Carla
kristine123Thank you Carla for your help. I traced them back to the 1801 census. I'm still trying to find some information on Enok O. Hansen, born in 1894. It states in the 1930 USA census that he married sometime in the 1920's. Just wondering if he had children. I found an Enok in SSDI who died in 1989 in Norway. I sent away for his SS application. Sounds like it could be him, same birth year. Also, trying to find out information about Hans S. Hansen, born 1884 Enok's brother, I have no information on him at all. I'm hoping someone will see this and recognize the names.
hastoEnok Hansen is mentioned in the book "Norges bebyggelse" page 794, showing rural hoses ca 1955: Hummersås, Rasvåg, Hidra, Vest-Agder couty. Sailor Enok Hansen b. 30/1 1894, m.t. Elisabeth Nicolaysen, b. 5/11 1898. Child: Ella, b. 19/9 1928. Harald Storaker Lyngdal, Norge
kristine123Thank you Harald. That is him, same date of birth on the SSDI and the farm name is the same. Do you know if the Hummeraas farm is still in existence?
jwknudsenYou may wish to contact Fedrenes Minne, Rasvag, 4432 Hidrasund. This maritime historical museum is quite near Hummeraas and may have information about the farm. It also has a genealogical database of island families, although this information is not currently available online. I had access to the database during a recent visit and found enough useful data about my Hidra-born great-grandfather & his family to obtain their parish records from Statsarkivet i Kristiansand. Best, John Knudsen museum email address: fedrenes@sol.no
hastoHummersås is high in the hillside above Rasvåg. A link describing a walk in the hillside: http://www.turistforening.com/hidra.htm Harald Storaker Lyngdal, Norge
kristine123Thanks John and Harold, I will contact the museum and the picture of Hidra looked really nice...very relaxing.
kristine123I am trying to locate my Grandmother Sofie Hansen's leaving Certificate from her Parish in Norway between 1900-1905 into the USA. I would like to know what state she immigrated to. I know she came into Canada from the USA in 1905. She was born in 1879. Her Parish was Hitterø. I am also wondering if she left with someone. Thank you for any help you can give to me
hastoThere is a Sofie Hansdtr, b. in Sokndal, on Stø in Hidra in 1900 census: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f01042&variabel=0&postnr=1797&fulle=true&spraak=n The strange thing is that she there is listed as "gårdmands-enke" = farmer's widow. Lars B. Stø is a "gårdmand", and he seems to be father of the two children. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f01042&variabel=0&postnr=1797&fulle=true&spraak=n The same Sofie Stø is on the farm in 1955, according to the book "Norges bebyggelse". She was born April 1. 1879 in Sokndal. Her husbond is not mentioned, but 9 children, Arne born Sept 22. 1900 is the oldest. I wonder if this can be the same Sofie who is emigrant in 1903, a servant maid, on her own? http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=KRISTUT&variabel=0&postnr=38710&fulle=true&spraak=n Probably not. Another Sofie, born 1873: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=KRISTUT&variabel=0&postnr=38710&fulle=true&spraak=n Harald Storaker Lyngdal, Norge
kristine123Hi Harald, We think the last one is her Sofie b. 1878, but we seem to have a problem finding out when or if she ever ended up in Wisconsin. Someone sent this to me. Do you have any other ideas? The passengers in the "leaving from Oslo" record found below, arrived in New York 17 May 1903 on the Cedric from Liverpool. I do not, however, see Sophie/Sofie Hansen/Hanson on the Cedric. It's possible she stayed in England a bit longer? I see no record for her in 1904 or 1905 though. The Cedric's entry list is at http://snurl.com/1914 I don't know if URLs work for Ellis records, I hope so... I found the arrival by searching for Lina Torstensen, another passenger. You can do some browsing there and see if you can find someone that might have been "mis-transcribed". Problem is, there are no original images for this ship anyway, so you won't get a destination even if you find her. Even Tony Hanson's missing image thingy doesn't find anything, so I think it's just not scanned.
BriningI don't think the Cedric is the ship that Sofie came on. Lina Torstensen is registerd with the HVIDE STJERNE (White Star line) which the Cedric is part of. Sofie is with the Cunard line. It is possible that what ever ship she sailed on went to another port. You may have to search the microfilm records from the NARA http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/research_topics/immigration.html Carla
kristine123Hi Carla, Thank you for pointing that error out to me. I am sending for the micro film for the Boston Port. Edited by - kristine123 on 09/05/2003 15:00:39
kristine123To all the people who went out of there way to help me find my family, thank you. I was able to locate Enok's Daughter Ella in Norway and we had a very nice conversation. She knows a lot about the family that I have been searching for. I am so excited to be in touch with her. She will be sending me pictures of some the family members. I hope everyone on this board is as lucky as I am in finding there relatives. Again, thank you and God Bless You all. Sincerely, Kristine
