BryJillthank you, ninakarls for your info,im having a bit of trouble understandind the symbols,i notice all the Gulbransens are spelt with a d ,Gulbrandsens,is this common in Norway i wonder, does f,or m stand for female or male ?,the letter u i cant work out ,and the numbers at the end ?, thank you for your time Regards Bryan Gulbransen
hastoGulbransen was a patronymic surname meaning "son of Gulbran". In Kristiania (Oslo) they probably used it as a family surname. Spelling of names before 1900 had no standard. One person might get his name spelled in many different ways. Gulbrand = Guldbrand = Gudbrand = Gulbran etc. The "d" is usually not pronounced. The most common spelling of the surname today is Gulbrandsen. 5092 persons in Norway use it. http://www.ssb.no/english/subjects/00/navn_en/ Link to one of the emigrant listings: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&variabel=0&postnr=25119&fulle=true&spraak=n You are right about m/f (maskulin/feminin). G = (gift) married, u = unmarried. The numbers show age. "år" = year. Harald Storaker Lyngdal, Norge
nozzlehead5This is probably not helpful, but there is a baby Amanda B Gulbranson (August 31, 1891 to September 27, 1891) buried in the South Lutheran Cemetery in Northwood, North Dakota. No information about who the parents were, and her parents are not buried there. Maybe the parents are in the 1880 census.
