The LAYES name
rhoedaI was told by LLoydd Layes ,senior(86yrs old) that his family came from the Norse .he said that he thought the place started with the letterA. ( I thought Angesley).I was just wondering if Lee is the sound of laye in norse ?( ive also looked under other variants(English) but haven't had much luck with Norwegian ancestry.I would be geatful for any assistance or suggestions you have.thankyou. PEACE
ladytaureanDo you have any names or dates to throw out here? Did Lloydd come from Norway as well?
rhoedaLLoyd Cuthbert Layes was born March 20,1917,Glace Bay,Nova Scotia. He doesn't rmember dates.I did verify with him that they indeed changed the spelling of their family name often ( Layes, lays.leys,ley.leigh,lee,Lacy,Lynch,Olave,Olafir,Olave the white,re possibilities). He had 3 sisters-Muriel,Stacha,Clara and 2 brothers- Frances and Joseph. He thought that his family name was Norse-irish origin. There are records on the UK and Wales {a2a files.}site on some of these variants, but I'm having no luck tracing their exact line.He married Christina Jones born:1920.Apparently Clara ( in Glace Bay nursing home ) may have the family bible with their genealogy recorded in it,but we can't locate it.
BriningIt could be that Layes is an adaptation of a farm name in Norway but you would need more info to go on to figure out which one. Would his family have been in the 1901 Canadian census? I think the Canadian census listed nationalities. Can you get copies of his parents death certificates or obituaries? I don't now about Canda but in the US Parents names are listed and that might also give you a hint as to where they were from and if we had the names of the people in Norway it might be possible to find them on the Digitalarkivet census The Canadian census is on line here http://www.archives.ca/02/020122_e.html Good Luck Carla
rhoedaSorry I didn't get back to you on this. No I can't find the spelling in our Canadian census. Lloyd was born in Canada.I found 3 Leys names in a Newfoundland cemetary. .but can't get the connections to this family.I'm still waiting for the family to send copies of a record of names.Unfortunately there there isn't a sense of urgency. Thankyou for your assistance anyway.
blayesI am not sure about the Leys in Newfoundland but there are a few Layes in Nova Scotia. I am not sure but there is a Regina who was married to a Joseph Layes who passed away in the mid 1990's. I am not sure where she is living now but I believe it is with family members in Sydney, NS.
David LayesJoesph Aloysius Layes brother of George Layes was my grandfather, his wife Regina now lives in River Ryan. I will ask her again about our name but I have no idea where the name comes from either. If anyone finds out please let me know as I have three small children with this name and would like to be able to tell them of their ancestry.

StephanMy name is Stefan Layes. I live in the southwest of Germany in a small town called RAMSTEIN. There are a couple of Layes families living here around Ramstein. I know from a brother of my grandfather, that in the middle of the 19th century two uncles of him emigrated to the U.S. I can date back my fathers family (the LAYES name) until the beginning of the 18th century. It´s very interesting to find a forum about the LAYES name!
