looking for information on the Hofstad family
puffinhi my name is john paulson, i'm looking for information on the hofstad family. I don't know what part of norway they came from??? i have a family tree book done, but there are some things that don't make sense to so i was wondering if anyone could help me find the answers i'm looking for. my great grandma's maiden name was Anna Hofstad. her father's name was torsten hofstad, and his father's name was erik hofstad. thanks, john
ladytaureanJohn, Do you have any dates of birth for Anna, Torsten or Eric Hofstad. In veiwing the the census records in Norway, there many that carried the Hofstad name, and their are many Hofstad farms. If you could also give their spouse's names that will help in tracking down the right people.

Ok I looked through my family tree book, and I found some information. Erik Hofstad was born in 1813 on the Hofstad Gaal. He then married Mali Troite, their son Torsten Hofstad was born 12 September 1839. Torsten then married Bergetta Ulstad, their daughter Anna Hofstad was born over in America on 6 April 1872. The information that I have in my family tree book is what confuses me. I don't know where or how we got the Hofstad name??? The first name in the family tree book is Lars Anderson Hoset, born in 1663 around Trondhjem, Norway. The only information stating that I am a Hofstad is that Lars Gunnarson Beitland married Mali Andersdatter Hofstad in 1761. Did husbands usually take the wife's maiden name back then??? thanks, john
ladytaureanJohn, I found your Hofstad family in the 1865 Census in Nord-Trøndelag,øvre Stjørdal on a Hofstad farm: Erik Olsen Husfader Gr. br. Leilenning g 53 m Mali Neilsdatter Hans Kone g 49 k Torsten Eriksen Deres Søn hjelper Faderen med Gaarbruget ug 26 m Niels Eriksen Deres Søn hjelper Faderen med Gaarbruget ug 21 m Ingebor Eriksdatter Deres datter ug 16 k Riborg Eriksdatter Deres datter ug 12 k Mathies Eriksen Deres Søn ug 10 m Randi Eriksdatter Deres datter ug 6 k All born in øvre Størdalen Of Course Torsten was not yet married to Bergetta. And since she and Torsten were already in America by 1872 there is no record of them in the 1900 census for Norway. Let me take a closer look at the things you have wrote down and see if I can find anymore information. I have a family history book for my Halvorsen family, and I know how confusing information can be if you have no idea what you are looking for! I hope this helps out a little. I will check LDS and see what records I can find there, and I will post them back here!
ladytaureanJohn, I found a record of marriage for Lars Gundersen Beitland and Mali Andersdatter Hofstad...Mali died 9 years later..So what I think may have happened and how your family got the Hofstad name is Lars inherited the Hofstad farm after his wife died...In other words people took on last names from farm names. Here is the record: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Husband LARS GUNDERSEN BEITLAND Birth: Christening: Marriage: 05 FEB 1761 Stjordal, Nord Trondelag, Norway Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wife MALI ANDERSDATTER HOFSTAD Birth: Christening: Marriage: 05 FEB 1761 Stjordal, Nord Trondelag, Norway Death: 21 JAN 1770 Burial: -----------------------
ladytaureanJohn, Here is a link that will take you to Lars Gundersen on a Hofstad farm listed with him are his children.Ole Larsen is Erik Olsen's father. I hope this helps out some! http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1801/f11714&postnr=4439&spraak=e
