| Where is this city? |
| momcwill | I have just received my grandparents' death certificates from Illinois and need to find out where my greatgrandparents are from. The death certificate for my grandmother indicates that her mother and father were born in Throndliyem, Norway. I am not sure of the spelling as the entire death certificate is handwritten and the letters of the city are not clear. It is possible that the city is Hrondliyem or Throndbjem. This, however, is more of a clue than I had previously had on the place of birth. I also have names - Marcus Larsen and Bertgeta or Bertgata Lee. All I had known before was Larsen. I would appreciate any help anyone could give on finding more information about my greatgrandparents.

| ninakarls | The official spelling is now Trondheim, it used to be Trondhjem (=home of the Tronds). Could that be Markus Larsen emigrating 7 years old in 1888?

| momcwill | Marcus Larsen, is the father of Bertina (also spelled Bernthine on some records), born Feb 18, 1870. To my knowledge, he did not come to the United States. My grandmother (Bertina Larsen Olsen) and grandfather (Albert R. Olsen) originally came to the US is 1888 or 1889. They went back to Norway for a 2 year period and returned to the US in 1898. It is my guess that Marcus Larsen would have been born somewhere around 1840-1850, but I have no information on him other than his name. I would appreciate any leads you can give me.

I found a Markus Larsen and Begithe Lie in Christianssund,Møre og Romsdal in the 1865 census. Could this be your Markus Larsen?

| momcwill | I believe the reference you gave is correct. My grandmother was born Dec 18 1870 in Christiansund, so this Markus Larsen, Bergithe Lie, and son Lidvig seems to fit. Can you help me with translations on some of the words? What does Sjauarbeider mean? Does hans husholderske mean housewife? What does the ug mean? Where are Stjordals and Strindens? Thank you for your help.

Sjauarbeider means some type of laborer, Im not sure what, so maybe someone else can help with what type..Hans husholderske means his housekeeper, The ug means unmarried, Stjørdals is in Nord-Trøndelag, Striden is in Sor-Trøndelag.

a "sjauarbeider" works with loading and unloading of goods. Since this was in Kristiansund (a coastal city), the "goods" was most likely fish. An english name of the profession would then be "docker".
Strindens is now a part of the city of Trondheim, in Sør Trøndelag county. Stjørdal is in Nord Trøndelag county, and lies approx. 40 km (60 miles) north of Trondheim.
