Hval Family (translation help needed)
freadeHello, I'm looking for help translating and interpreting this information from the census of 1900. If anyone can help with the occupations, and any information about the birthplaces? Ole K. Hval (Hval refers to Hvalsmarken I believe, is that plausible?) Occupation: Samlagsforstander (forstand is intellectual?) Birthplace:Haug Bu (Also have seen Norderhaug as his birthplace, pretty sure the Bu means Buskerud?) Thomas Bjerk (Bjerk refers to Hære Bjørka I believe, is that plausible?) Occupation: Bedstefader(grandfather?)/Rentenist(?) Birthplace:Eker Bu Thanks for any help, Frank
ninakarlsYes you are right, Buskerud is the County. Hval is the name of the farm Ole, or his ancestors, came from. He is born in Haug Parish in Nordrehov, and there is a farm named Hvalsmarken. Once a part of the Hval farm, I'd believe ("marken" means "the field"). In Hønefoss Ole is manager of a co-operative alimentary store. The grandfather, the wife's father "is living of his means". Bjerk translates "birch", can also be spelled Bjørk, Biørk or Bjærk. In Eker are farms named Bjerkly, Bjørke, Bjørka and Bjørkedaak or Bjørkedok.
jwiborgHi, this must be your "Thomas Bjerk" in the 1865-census: Click here His name is Thomas Christiansen, and he lives in the farm "Hære Bjørka" in Eker parish (as you suggested). His wife is Oline Olsdatter, and they have two kids, Anton and Christiana (later Ole K. Hvals wife). Jan
jwiborgHi again, I would guess "Ole K. Hval" from the 1900-census is this person in 1865: Click here His name is then Ole Knudsen, and he lives on the farm Hvalsmarken in Norderhov parish, Buskerud. His birthplace is "Norderhaug" Jan
