She is 5.5 years old, prob. born in/around January 1876.
She is leaving with her parents Sevald & Anna Sivertsen, sister Petra (15y) and brother Josef (6.5y).
Their destination is Albert Lea Minnesota.
Their residence says "Bø". It could be Bø in Vesterålen (Nordland county).

I believe you'll have to look in the churchbooks for the Parish she [Petra] was born, because there must be something wrong here. I really doubt that Sevald and Anna became parents at the age of 15!
Either Sevald & Anna are not 30 at the time of emigration, or Petra is not their legitimate child. She could for instance be adopted.
If the family are from Bø in Vesterålen, you'll have to take a look into [url="http://www.riksarkivet.no/arkivverket/kilder/medier/mikrofilm/mikrokort/kb-nordland.html#891"]these[/url] churchbooks. (Or you'll have to ask someone to look it up.) They are only on microfilms.
891.A05 - 891.A07 should cover most of it... [:)]
F=born/christened, V=married, D=dead, Utf=migrated.
Interesting things to look up:- Sevald Sivertsen born 1850-1852?
- Sevald Sivertsen married 1870-1876?

According to the information we have, the family most likely traveled on the [url="http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=sardi"]S/S Sardinian [/url] of the [url="http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_shiplist.asp?co=allan"]Allan Line [/url] from Liverpool 1881-07-28 and arrived to Quebec 1881-08-05. for the S/S Domino[/url] journey 1881-07-21 Trondheim - Christiansund - Aalesund - Hull. If Petra was a part of the family it is possible that she could have died young, maybe even on the voyage. Maybe you should try to get a copy of the passenger list for the Sardinian. There is a link at the bottom of this page to an article about "Hunting Passenger Lists", it will give you some tips on how to get to the Canadian records. |

No, we only have started transcribing the pre 1875 passenger lists! The passenger list you are looking for must be accessed by ordering the microfilm! The link to the "Hunting Passenger Lists" only explains how to get the microfilm (3 ways: purchase - inter library loan - LDS) |

Thanks a million for really comming through for me.
The Severson name went through a lot of changes. I guess in Norway it was Sivertson. Mathilde who later became Mathilda was my paternal grandmother.
As I talk to you, I have the obits of Enevold and Anna in front of me.
I am beginning to get a few clues, but it has always been the million dollar question as to what happened to Petra. I don't buy the theory she died early, as both Joseph and Mathilda lived into their upper 80's

Maybe you can help me with on last clue. Using the following online dictionary for Norweigen to English: http://homepages.rootweb.com~Norway/na17.html I come up with two terms stedatter=stepdaughter and fosterb which is an abbreviation for fosterbarn or fosterchild.
I noticed Anna was roughly 4-5 years older than Enevold. If Petra were her daughter, why wouldn't one of these terms apply?

and it doesn't list Petra as one of his children so a good chance she was a stepdatter. As to the census. It was not an exact science and there are a lot of errors including not lising the correct relationship
Anna's obit doesn't mention Petra either http://www.usgennet.org/usa/wi/county/clark/obits/1921.htm
To find out who she was and what happened to her you are going to have to get into the microfilms for the parish and the ships arrival records or maybe the county or church records in Iowa might have something.

| Borge | According to the 1875 census and the obits Anna was 20 years old when Petra was born, so she could be her daughter. Another possibility is that she was a orphan relative. However, the only way to get this knowledge is through the church registers. There might also be information about this in a bygdebook for the area where they lived, I will try to find out if there is one. |

There are bygdebooks for Bø, with the genealogy of the people living there. There are 3 volumes.

I don't know if it was a custom in those days, but Enevold was listed as industrous, or hard worker.
I looked that term up in my dictionary: arbeidsm.

Yes, he is listed as "Arbeidsm." (Arbeidsmand) which means laborer, but that title was used for all kinds of different laborers, if they were miners, carpenters, or what ever, so it is not a very precise description. They traveled on the steamship [url="http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=domin"]Domino[/url] of the Wilson Line from Trondheim to Hull, England, from Hull they went by train to Liverpool to board the Allan Line transatlantic steamer. |

I found out about my grandmother and the alusive Petra.
Excusive my Norweigen, but I obtained some material from Statsarkivet I Trondheim/ Postboks 2825 Elgesaeter/Tronheim.
Supposeably Petra Amalie was born on June 1866 the daughter of bachelor Simon Peder Hemmingsen from Hemnes paris and maid Anna Marie Ellinsdatter from the Ramberg farm in Bo in Nordland.
In 1873, Anna Marie married Enevold Severson. In 1881, the family left Norway, all under the name of Severson.
It wasn't until 1886 when Petra became wed to the Gunner Olson in Lake Mills, Iowa, that she took back her original father's name during the ceremony.
One final thing, in my great grand mother's obit she was listed as Anna Marie Ellingson.
No wonder it is so hard to keep track of one's relatives.
