Ship Clarissa |
Christine Pearce | My forefathers sailed on the Clarissa from Gothenburg to New York in 1842, and settled in Muskego, Wisconsin. Does anyone have any information or pictures on the ship?
If interested, I found this old newspaper article on the web:
The "Clarissa," captained by James Lunt, sailed into New York harbor, August 15, having left 54 days before from Gothenburg. The ship carried 96 passengers, including 82 Norwegians, in addition to some iron intended for Boorman, Johnston and Company. The captain reported having sighted a large number of icebergs on the passage. (New York Herald, August 13, 1842.
Look forward to hearing from anyone with further info. |
Borge | Hi Christine
We do not have any additional information or any picture of the ship, but we have the passenger list:

It would be nice if we could find some additional information to add to the Clarissa page! What is the link for the web site with the newspaper article? |
Christine Pearce | Børge, I'll be darned if I can find that link again, but I can tell you that it wasn't a reprint from the newspaper: it had been transcribed by someone. If I can find it again I will definiately let you know. |
Borge | Some place at the back of my head I have stored the idea of seeing something about this ship [Clarissa (Adams?)] on a site dealing with Mormons from Norway. |
jwiborg | Are you looking for this? Scroll down to "CLARISSA"...
Jan |
Christine Pearce | Bingo - That's the article! Thanks so much for that, Jan! In the future I'll be more careful to document my sources! Børge can now add this information with confidence to the site.
I haven't checked out the Norwegian-Morman-Clarissa (Adams?) line Børge mentioned, but when I do I'll let everyone know.
Cheers, Jan! [:I]

Christine Pearce | Ever since I found my 3rd great-grandparents, Niels Cornelius Guldbrandsen and Maren Carlsdatter, on the Clarissa passenger list I have been hunting for more information.
I have now found a source that says the book "Norwegian Immigrants to the USA" by Gerhard B. Naeseth states that the passenger list of the Clarissa says that "Niels Cornelius GULDBRANDSEN was born in Strømsø and is the son of Gulbrand TORGERSEN of Kongsberg and Gunhild ISCAHSDATTER. I haven't been able to get the book myself, but thought I'd come back here to see if anyone can verify the information directly from the passenger list.
If true, this will be a real breakthrough in my quest, so I'll be anxiously awaiting a reply! |

Christine Pearce | Thanks for that, Carla. Yes, I have seen the LDS record before. The problem is confirming what the book "Norwegian Immigrants to the USA" by Gerhard B. Naeseth states about Niels Cornelius Gulbrandsen's parents, i.e. that they were Gulbrand TORGERSEN of Kongsberg and Gunhild ISCAHSDATTER. The book states the information on his parents was obtained from the passenger list, but the list on this site doesn't mention them.
|
Borge | If you look closer in Naeseth's book you will se that he gives reference to other sources in adition to the passenger lists. I believe he used the lists as a starting point, and from there went on gathering additional information from different other sources, like the Norwegian church registers, censuses and more - actually it is a masterpiece! |
Brining | The Digitalarkivet
has the records for baptised in Strømsø on line and I didn't see him there. The only other way to verify would be to get the microfilm church records and go through them

Christine Pearce | Thanks, Borge and Carla.
Carla, I also have been through Digalarkivet's records and didn't find a Niels Cornelius Gulbrandsen, his wife Maren Carlsdatter (Udvigen) nor their two children born in Norway: Karen (b. Drammen 9 Jun 1839) Gustavus (b. 1841 in Stromso) in any records. Likewise, I have been unable to locate Niels's parents Gulbrand Torgersen and Gunild Isachsdatter. It is frustrating because "everyone" seems to find what they are looking for at Digitalarkivet, and I can't find a thing! I know this is a bit off scope from the Clarissa, but how would I get these microfilm records -- in a language I can understand - and that wouldn't cost a fortune? |
Brining | Hi Christine, The on line records for baptisms only go through 1822, that is why no Karen or Gustavus. I think that Nils Cornelius was born in Kongsberg, not Strømsø, since his father was from Kongsberg. When Searching the Digitalarkivet I always use the begins with or contains. Names aren't always spelled the way we think and there are transcription errors. Read some of
John Føllesdal's articles. They help a lot.
The LDS Family History Center's have the microfilms.
