Morris ThurstonI am a descendant of Thore Torstensen Aarvelta, an 1839 passenger on the Emilie. Thore, who was just 19 when he left Norway was called Tora Thurston in America. He settled first in the Fox River Colony in Illinois, joining the Mormon Church in 1842, then moved to Lee County, Iowa, just across the river from Nauvoo, Illinois. Tora had a fascinating life, immigrating to the Great Basin with the Mormon pioneers in 1850, pioneering several towns in Utah (Ephraim, Circleville and Annabella), fighting in Indian wars, raising seventeen children, and finally becoming an American citizen just weeks before his death in 1895. I have published a 421-page biography titled "Tora Thurston: The History of a Norwegian Pioneer." The biography also contains an extensive genealogy of Tora's ancestors in Numedal back to the 1500s on many lines. If anyone is interested, it can be found in many libraries or you can obtain a copy from me for $38.
