Norwegian language
nanDoes anyone know what a shipbuilder would be called in Norwegian. I need help in the occupations on the census. Thanks
BorgeI would try searching for words containing "skibs" or "skips". The word for shipbuilder would be "skibsbygger", but it might be entered different in the census as there would be different types of work a man could do on the ship. He could be some kind of laborer or the actual owner of the yard, and in a way they were all shipbuilders, but will have different titles in the census.
jwiborgOr you can just search for parts of the word, like occupations that contains "bygg" (ie. build). That would cover many professions though, like housebuilder etc... [:)] From the 1900 census in Norway, these professions are alle identical to a shipbuilder: baadbygger, bådbygger, dampskibsbaadbygger, prambygger, skibsbygger, skjøitebygger, snedkebygger. Keep in mind that there are many different spellings from the census, like baabygger, baadbygg, baadbygge, baadbygger, baadbyggerarbeid... But as I said, if you search for occupations that contain the word "bygg", you will find most of them... Jan
nanThank you so much for your help. Hopefully] it will narrow my search a bit.
