| NancyC | I am trying to find out when my great-grandfather emigrated from Norway to the USA and on which ship he sailed, where he landed, etc. His name appears in various forms and spellings. He was born at Stokkset Farm in Furnes, outside of Hamar, Norway, on March 11, 1836. (At the time a part of Vang prestegjeld.) His father was Anders Nilsson Stokkset, his mother Martha Hansdotter Faråsen store, and he was named Nils. The family lost Stokkset in the early 1850s. His name is listed as Nils Andersen Åsberget in the list of emigrants in the Furnes (Vang) Church Book and entered April 18, 1854. Family listings are found in the bygdebøker for Furnes and Veldre. Nils eventually settled in Lansing, Iowa, married Anne Marie Trondsdotter Buringrud (or Jacobson) May 19, 1864, at the East Paint Lutheran Church near Waterville, Iowa, and died at Lansing March 10, 1922. In the USA he called himself Nels Nelson. According to what my mother had heard, he came to the USA through the Gulf of Mexico, and travelled up the Mississippi River. Unfortunately, all who might have known are now deceased. I understand it is difficult to find published lists of passengers for the period 1854-55, and I am thankful for any information. |
