Hello: Looking for information on Johan A Stokke and his daughter Agnetta.

I have a little information about my grandmother. She was "born 1856 in Gjovik." She married Peter Brynildson in Vang North Dakota,USA in 1886. She is buried in Govan, Saskatchewan, Canada. Agnetta had 4 children that lived: Hendrik, Josephine, Amelia and Gyda.

Johan is born in 1829 Norway and his wife's name was Josephine(?). HIs wife did not come to America, so possibly died before he immigrated. His children born in Norway were Ingeborg, Agnetta, Andrew, and Edward.

Any help would be appreciated.

Same source (Family Search index of Norwegian records) Eli Larsdatter parents said to be Lars Pedersen b 1758 Gjøsti, Biri, Oppland and Marte Jacobsdatter b 1768 Aalset Søndre, Biri, Oppland.

Again, need to confirm with primary sources (church books). People start to copy and paste stuff like this, and when an error has occurred, that error then gets copied over and over. That said, sometimes online family trees turn out to be right. It could happen. The Family Search tree I linked to cites appropriate sources and appears to be credible.

The above Christian is a good candidate for Andrew's son because according to Find-a-Grave, Agnette Stokke Brynildson buried in the area, at Saint Olaf Cemetery in Govan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Canada.

You found Johan in Norway census 1875 (before wife died) and 1891 (after wife died).

Stenar emigrated 1884 headed to Rio, Wisconsin.
Andreas emigrated 1885 headed to Rio, Wisconsin.
Edvard emigrated 1885 headed to Rio, Wisconsin.
Agnethe emigrated 1886 headed to Rio, Wisconsin.

Thank you for the translation Kåre. I take it you think some of us do not speak Norwegian? (you are right)
from Kåre's post: "Biri is a village in the municipality of Gjøvik, Oppland county, Norway." So Biri is the right area for "our" Ingeborg Johannesdatter Stokke.
Now to check the birth record for Ingeborg, but meanwhile it is reasonable to suppose this is Agnette's sister Ingeborg traveling to her daughter Josephine, who emigrated in 1901 and married Carl Dahlvang and lives in North Dakota.

Hello; Thanks again.
I have notes and they are hand written so it could be a mistake by the author. I think the census-1865 are correct people. The 1886 travel could be, although I have never had the family connected with Wisconsin.
Here is the written text,
"They were born in Norway, The lived on the Stokke Gaard (farm) at Mjosa near Gjovik...Johan Johnson and his daughter, Ingeborg, moved to Vang, North Dakota in 1882, The rest of the family had moved there in 1881..." I believe this was written by Orville Swenson, Agnetta grandson. He complied a family tree and he lived in Calgary. Agnetta died 1925 in Saskatchewan, Canada. Changing last names make this a struggle. Confusion is easy. I hope everyone thinks solving these puzzles are fun.

Most often the destination listed on an emigration record is a port of entry or another place that is just a "place to land." Probably a friend or relative or neighbors lived in Rio, Wisconsin. Most immigrants needed a chance to regroup, maybe earn money, for supplies and for passage for family members left back home, before heading further west to file a claim on the homestead land they'd heard about. Most North Americans who try to settle a chronology for their immigrant ancestors find it very hard to find information to fill that first gap in time, which is typically a year to several years.

Who is Johan Johnson? Is that the name Stenar used in the USA?

Records from the USA and Canada can be sought and found that match the family in Norway, such as the full date of birth for Agnetta and her siblings.

Johan Johnson is the father of Agnetta, Ingeborg, Andrew, Edward, and Steiner, grandfather of Josephine. His last name seem to be flexible. The children used the last name Stokke in North Dakota.
