About This Search
In 2026, the entire section on the history of Norwegian settlements in America from Volume 1 of Ulvestad’s 1907 edition was translated into English and added to the database. This material is now also searchable. As a result, many individuals whose biographical entries have not yet been transcribed can still be found.
You can search the Settlement History pages for Norwegian-American communities across the United States and Canada. This searches the full text of each location's description — try a place name, a state, a person, or any keyword related to Norwegian settlement history. Include partial matches: By default, search looks for whole words. Enable this to also match parts of words — useful if you're unsure of an exact spelling or want broader results. Results show a short excerpt from each matching page, with your search terms highlighted.
