Adams County, Iowa

Early Norwegian Settlement

The first Norwegians in Adams County were Andrew Anderson from Hjelmeland near Stavanger; John Larson and Thom Olson from Bømmelsøen; Nils Thompson from Stjerneøen; and Lars Bremse, also from the Stavanger area. They came from Benton County, Iowa, and settled at Strand in 1870. The settlers began growing corn and wheat, and Corning was their nearest market.

Churches and Congregations

The First Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation, as it was formally called, was established at Strand in 1875 by Pastor Sheldal. The congregation belonged to Hauge’s Synod and had its own church. There were no other Norwegian churches or congregations in the county.
