Baker County, Oregon

Early Norwegian Settlement

The first Norwegian settler in Baker County was Eilert Eilertsen. He came from Vernon County, Wisconsin, and settled as a farmer at Haines in 1886. Few Norwegians lived in his immediate neighborhood, although a number had settled in Baker City.

Norwegian Place Names

There was also a post office named Norway in the county, although by 1905 the Norwegian population in that area was still very small.
