Cass County, Iowa

Norwegian Settlement

O. J. Ostrus, whose parents came from Strand Parish in Norway, was the first person of Norwegian origin to settle in the vicinity of Cumberland. This became the only Norwegian settlement in Cass County. He settled there in 1871. He was followed by Thom Ericksen and Sven Sampson from Årdal in Sogn, and Lars Larsen Myhre from Hjelmeland Parish. By the time this account was written, all three were deceased.

Churches and Congregations

A Norwegian congregation was established in 1875 by Pastor O. Sheldahl. It originally belonged to the Augustana Synod but later joined Hauge’s Synod.

Norwegian Place Names

The settlement was known as Norway, although it remained small.
